Driving London to Manchester at Easter

We will be in London the week before Easter next year and need to drive to Manchester to spend Easter with relatives. Is it better to leave on Good Friday or Saturday. We are concerned about traffic jams on the motorways and getting out of London.

Do you 'need' to drive'? Presumably the relatives have a carand can take you out and about once you get there. I would take the train. Easter is the first holiday of the year and the traffic can be horrendous, it will start to build up on Thursday night, Good Friday can be very bad, also Saturday. No one can predict where and when the holdups will happen, but its not a pleasant drive at the best of times.

There are five of us so we need to have a car. The train was just too expensive for the 5 of us. The bus was more reasonable but then we imagine it will also get caught in the traffic.

Train fares can be very low if you book ahead. You won't be able to book yet for Easter as fares are only sold 3 months ahead. I would recommend having another look at www.virgintrains.com in mid Jan to see if you can find a bargain. Taking the train would be so much more pleasant than driving not to mention the cost of petrol! If you want an idea of how low the train fare can be, try a dummy booking for say 6 weeks ahead of now and you may be pleasantly surprised.

If one of your group is under 16, you can buy a family railcard for £20 that gets you 33% off most train fares for all passengers in your group. Google friendsAndfamily railcard for details.

Any ideas how to get from Gloucester Road to Euston. Will have lots of luggage. Are there lifts at all the stations or will we have to carry luggage down steps?
