Driving and sightseeing from London to Edinburgh

We will pick up a car at London airport and then will take 4 days to drive to Edinburgh where we will pick up some friends for the rest of the trip. We are a couple, well-traveled and well-versed in driving in the UK...but would like to know some places we should visit, stop overnight...we like B&B's or small inns...and we could happily venture off the motorways. The first stop would be within 2 hours of the airport as we will take an overnight flight and that will be about all we can handle in terms of driving that day. Any advice, information would be most appreciated. Thank you!

I would strongly advise that you don't drive at all on the first day, not even for two hours. Tiredness/fatigue can affect your driving ability as much as drinking alcohol.

You could spend your first day/night in Windsor or Oxford, and pick up a car from there the next morning.

Windsor can be reached by using a car service, or by taking the regular service buses that depart from Terminal 5 (if arriving at a different terminal you can transfer to Terminal 5 free of charge). Oxford can be reached in about an hour by using the excellent Oxford Airline service, which runs every 20-30 minutes from Central Bus Station (linked by walkway to Terminals 1, 2 and 3) and outside Terminal 5.

Driving straight off a flight is very ill advised - even if you claim to be very expereinced in UK driving ('Good Driver' by overseas visitors is one of the claims which always produces a hollow laugh)

Erm, not sure why a foreign driver cannot be a good driver, particularly if they are well-travelled, but I would echo the advice in 3 above. It would be much more civilised to let the bus take the strain, and unwind by wandering around Oxford or Windsor for a day, before striking North.

Otherwise, think about stopping in places such as Warwick, Stamford, York, Hexham/Alnwick/Bamburgh on your way North.

Possible stops en route . Stamford is two hours from Heathrow and is a very attractive stone built small town. Nearby is a grand Tudor mansion called Burghley House. Then my next stop would be York or Harrogate or somewhere in Yorkshire. From there an interesting drive to Edinburgh is the A68 route which is more attractive than some of the more obvious routes.

How about taking a pre-booked taxi to Windsor (20 minutes from LHR) then the next day collect the car.

What are you interested in? Where have you already been? There are many thousands of B&Bs you could stay at. It's really annoying when many people suggest things and the OP comes back saying "seen it" or "hate it". Give us a clue.
