First Great Western Trains - Sat 23/Sun 24 August

Major work means that all lines through Swindon will be closed on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, impacting on a large part of the First Great Western railway network.

All lines are due to be reopened on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August, but trains will be very busy with people making their way home from the Reading Festival.

Replacement bus services will operate between Reading and Swindon (non-stop), Didcot Parkway and Swindon, and from Swindon to Bath Spa, Swindon to Westbury, Swindon to Bristol Parkway and Swindon to Gloucester.

Through train services will operate between London Paddington, Reading, Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads. These will run to an amended timetable and journey times will be extended by around 20 minutes.

Through train services will also operate between London Paddington, Reading, Bristol Parkway, Newport, Cardiff Central and stations to Swansea. Journey times on this route will be extended by up to 75 minutes.

A limited through train service will operate between London Paddington, Reading and Gloucester. Change at Gloucester for Cheltenham Spa.

Passengers travelling between London, Reading and Hereford should travel via Newport as the line between Worcester and Hereford will also be closed that weekend (rail replacement buses will operate)

There will be minimal impact on services between London and Oxford/Worcester, London and Devon/Cornwall and on the Cardiff - Bristol - Southampton - Portsmouth routes as these do not pass through Swindon; but some trains may be retimed to accommodate services diverted from other routes.

Local services in the Thames Valley and in Devon/Cornwall are not affected.
