Oxford to York

Hi, my husband and I are driving from Oxford to York on 7th September. We don't want to just drive straight through and would really appreciate any ideas on interesting towns, villages or places to see on our way. Thanks.

For most of the journey, "driving through" (or rather round) is EXACTLY what you want to do.

The 50 miles north of Oxford are stuffed with pretty villages, as are the 50 miles south of York.

In between, there's only one sensible choice. You can get onto the M40 north (possibly investing 1.5 hrs for a diversion to Warwick), stay on it, then the M42, then the M1 and stay on fast roads till about Pontefract. That's about 3.5 hrs

Or you can divert to the Peak District, either by taking the M6 Toll from the M42 to Lichfiield, then heading due north, or by taking the M1 as far as the A610. That will add a minimum of 5 hours, plus however long you linger.

Every other option for getting from North Oxfordshire to North Yorks is horrible. It's debatable whether the aftermath of England's industrialisation is as unlovely as the factories it created - but a huge proportion of it lies across the route from Oxford to York.

Hmm, flanneruk has a tendency to mix some good advice with some misleading hyperbole. Yes you will be crossing the industrial heartland of England but if you follow the obvious route of the M1 you will pass mostly through countryside and be within easy access of some lovely areas such as the Vale of Belvoir and Belvoir Castle, Sherwood Forest and the Peak District (Matlock Baths, Chatsworth House). If you pick one place to stop for a few hours, that should be enough.

If you want some more ideas I suggest that you look at the National Trust and English Heritage websites to see if there are any other great houses or historic sites to see en route - a consequence of that area being both rich agricultural land and the cradle of the Industrial Revolution is that there more grand stately homes in that area than you can shake a stick at.
