Somerset, Shropshire & Worcester beneath Chester reach

OK , I 'm simplifying this post to a smaller scope as requested. We seek input into four full driving B&B days and nights for the subject area above. We're coming north from below and headed to a full week next in Chester so some of the more northern radar in these three regions will be addressed then and there.

a) We'll look toward no more than one city in that time, with an emphasis always on charming villages and worthwhile sites.

b) An occasional don't miss pub/restaurant and particularly memorable good value meal anywhere in response cited areas is a bonus.

c) How best to organize these days for driving in these four days. Wales is already covered in another time frame.

I can look up details when provided sites and towns themselves, unless someone wishes to particularly emphasize something. That's it and, as always, much appreciation for helpful input.

Under a) Worthwhile sites

The National Trust's Brockhampton estate - more or less halfway between Worcester & Leominster - gorgeous spot (house open 7days to 2 Nov, then weekends, estate and tea room all year) - the house is only a few rooms but the setting is lovely (or at least it was in spring):

Witley Court is English Heritage - a huge shell (after 1930s fire) with restored gardens. Open 7 days to 2 Nov, then weekends. This one's a bit to the north-west of Worcester. The church (not EH) is also well-worth visiting if open (very different to most UK churches inside). The small garden centre next-door does light meals (very nice cakes IIRC):

You've already had lots of suggestions on the marches IIRC (Ludlow, Church Stretton, Wenlock Edge, Bishop's Castle, Shrewsbury and more) the Wye valley and I think the Malverns have been mentioned. Tewkesbury Abbey and Worcester Cathedral are both interesting though you may want a change from churches! Both Worcester & Tewkesbury are by the River Severn and subject to occassional flooding so perhaps not a good idea to book a riverside B & B, just in case!

In Shropshire, go to Ludlow. Possibly the most beautiful town in England. Fantastic architecture from Mediaeval to Georgian and a great castle, too. A foodie town - good market, great butchers and bakers on the marketplace too.

There is an outstanding and very expensive Michelin starred restaurant called Mr Underhill's. But apart from that there's a really good Thai restaurant right in the town centre. Next to Mr Underhill's on the weir side there's a lovely cafe with homemade cakes and light lunches.

Just north of town is the Ludlow Food Centre, for great local produce. Also has a good cafe/restaurant.

Seconding the mention of Witley Court in Worcestershire - absolutely fascinating shell of a house, somehow almost more evocative for being just a shell. Great fountains too.

For industrial history there's Ironbridge (Shropshire) - site of the original iron bridge, with a complex of museums (some working...) related to the area's past, it is a world heritage site:

Low Bradfield is in Yorkshire and is in the Peak District on the north eastern edges of Sheffield. It is nowhere near the places you are asking about.

What about Tetbury in Gloucestershire?

Highgrove, where HRH Prince Charles lives is a just down the road. You might bump into him or one of his relatives whilst out and about in the area.

The Prince of Wales has his own shoppe in Tetbury and has been known to stack the shelves and serve at the till when he isn't talking to the local shrubbery and wildlife. ;-)

Oxford is on the wrong side of the country from Tetbury, Cheltenham etc.

You won't make it over there! ;-)
