UK Road Trip for 6 days ideas

Hello,

We are planning a road trip around UK with my companion. We would be starting from the West Midlands and would like to explore the North of the country (with the furthest point being Edinburgh). Do you have any suggestions and nice places to visit/stay at? We have nothing planned yet and this is the first time we are going on a road trip, so any advice or suggestion would be appreciated.

P.S. We are planning on staying in small B&B to really get the full "road trip" experience. We are looking for beautiful places to explore rather than fancy ones :)

Thank you

If you fancy going due East, do consider Rutland and Stamford. Rutland has lots of pleasant villages - thatched cottages and so forth. Stamford is a handsome stone-built town and Burghley House is right next door. Right by the A1.

Go up the east coast to Edinburgh.

In between Scarborough and Middlesbrough you could stop off at Robin Hood Bay and Whitby.

Come back down the west coast and go to the Lake District. Drive along the B5289 through Buttermere and the Honister Pass to Keswick.

Then go over to the Yorkshire Dales and perhaps Hawes, the Ribblehead Viaduct and Ingleton and its waterfalls trail. And close to Settle is Malham Cove which is worth checking out.

I'd second Rutland/Stamford/Leicestershire, as a resident there. Stamford is a lovely unspoiled town, with Burghley house on the doorstep. Rutland/Leicestershrei have lotsof beautiful villages and scenery, and ncie pubs with nice food.

While you're driving, remember the the UK is covered with a huge network of public footpaths across farmland, fields, woods and so on. Most are quite well signed, though it's good to look at the map first. Eg: Pull up in EXton, in Rutland, go for a walk out of the thatched village, through the countryside, & back for lunch in the pub.

Going up the East coast is a great idea, and I'd recommend you take time to explore Northumberland on your way up to Edinburgh. This is a truly beautiful area. There's lots to see but highlights would be Bamburgh (castle), Alnwick (castle and gardens) and Holy Island (Lindisfarne).

I've always fancied staying overnight on Holy Island - you'll need to check the tide tables though as the Causeway gets covered with the sea twice a day.

So, a suggestion - Day 1 - drive to Whitby/Robin Hood Bay, stay overnight there or in North Yorks Moors area

Day 2 - Drive up the east coast, explore Northumberland, overnight in Bamburgh area

Day 3 - Drive up to Edinburgh, overnight there

Day 4 - Explore Edinburgh, overnight there again

Day 5 - Drive down towards Lake District, overnight there (Keswick?)

Day 6 - Drive across Dales, overnight in Hawes/Askrigg?
