Best chance of the least amount of rain?

Hello all,

I would like to book air tickets to England for a two week trip, but am having difficulty choosing the month. I do understand it's impossible to pick a time with any certainty, but if you have any ideas as to what month and time of month the odds should be in my favor of the least amount of rain, your comments would be welcome.

I thought about the last week of August/first week of September, but from what I'm reading online, August is pretty rainy and filled with schools kids. In addition, there is a bank holiday that falls in there as well. I'm pretty open in regards to time, but would prefer that I am not gone the 2nd week of any month (because of work obligations.)

Thank you!

Hi there

The short answer is I'm afraid that there are never any guarantees of less chance of rain in the UK for any given month. This year's washout summer more than ably demonstrates this. You could travel in March and enjoy warm sunshine, or go in high summer and have it pour with rain for a week. You take your chance anywhere in the UK I'm afraid. We've had better sunshine here in Wiltshire in mid October than we had at any time in the summer and October is usually a cold and often wet month.

In August and September this year it seemed to rain every other day.

The two days that I visited London over the summer were roasting hot - in fact when I went down there on 18th August it was the hottest day of the year, which to tell you the truth, wasn't much fun at all !

And then a week later on the bank holiday weekend, the annual Mathew Street festival was cancelled on the Monday due to heavy rain and strong winds.

Up here in Liverpool today it drizzled a bit in the morning and then the sun came out. But literaly 5 minutes ago the sky went dark grey and we had a torrential downpour which has just stopped now !

Look, is that blue sky I can see? Right, I'm going out - with my umberella !

AccuWeather is very wisely predicted a 50% chance of rain for the rest of the afternoon !

You can just never tell. July would be the safest bet, if this is anything to go by;

If you can avoid the last week of July, you will also avoid school hoildays.

Rain is never far away in any month, unfortunately.Curiously London also shows low average rainfall in February, not matched by rest of England.

GBfromDevizes: Thank you for the prompt, kind reply. You never really can predict weather can you? I'll likely pick a time from late spring thru early fall that will best suit my work schedule and availability of affordable airfare.

Our weather too has been crazy for the last two years. A hot spring (March) followed by a freeze and crop failures, only to be followd up with a very hot, dry summer. Again, thanks for taking the time to reply!

I agree with the general consensus that you're hatstand to analyse the weather to this extent - but should you wish to press on, start here www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/stationdata/

You'll note that our weather can vary quite markedly between locations a few miles apart - just to make things even more difficult. Let us know what you decide.

I fear our climate is so variable, you can never be sure. But if you have full flexibility, I would suggest May or June because (1) much longer daylight hours and (2) not in school holidays so fewer crowds

Ealing Blue makes a good point re February being low on rainfall - although that seems to be true for much of the South East of England, not just London Note though that it is also the month with most snow, should you be planning on flying into Heathrow !

Matt_1376: It does seem like you never can tell about the weather. I'm learning from the posts that even 30 year look backs at weather patterns won't give you (with any confidence) any idea of when to visit. At any rate...we have two umbrella's ready to go!

EalingBlue & rcspeirs: Thanks for the link. I am starting to lean toward the last week in June/1st week in July.

argyle_mikey: Thanks to you as well for a link. We'll likely fly into Heathrow because of the better availability of the type of ticket I'm looking for. We'd love to visit southern England. We are just in the early stages of gathering information.

Thanks again for your replies. I almost pulled the trigger for the end of August and have now seriously reconsidered. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I hope to let you know when a descision has been made. :-)

Isabella, sorry to rain on your parade (cough), but the last weekend in June is when the Glastonbury festival is on - and as everyone knows, it ALWAYS rains when Glastonbury is on.

Seriously, it can be rainy or fine at any time, more often than not all in the same day, there are no guarantees. Just come when it suits your timetable best.
