Historical Aviation Tour for 2 weeks

We will have two weeks in the UK to visit Historical Aviation sites during September/October 2013. I have been looking at various museums and memorials but would appreciate any suggestions as to must see locations.

Duxford, Hendon, Lincolnshire are in our plans.

We will look at hiring a car and wish to travel between sites, stopping here and there for two nights.

Any suggenstions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, mmmsby4

If you are heading up the A1 to Lincolnshire (past RAF Wittering - see the Harrier outside) then consider a detour to Cottesmore. No longer an RAF base (now an army site) but the church has an airforce chapel and the cemetery memorialises some RAAF flyers.

There are, as you know, loads of former RAF stations clustered around the A1. North Luffenham (now army), Woolfox (some small businesses), Morkery Wood (now just woodland).

And active sites like RAF Conningsby.

In the East Anglia region is the Flixton Aviation Museum, run by volunteers, free entry with donation request.

If you are in the Cambridge area, I would recommend going into the city for two sights. Firstly the Eagle pub, and especially the section at the back which I think is called the RAF bar. Secondly I recommend the American cemetery. The chapel, and most of all the amazing ceiling there, is well worth a visit.

Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for your replies, very very helpful.

As I have mentioned, we will do Duxford (for a second time) Hendon (first time) and have booked the Just Jane taxy at Lincolnshire.

Any others that we could add to the mix, greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much again, mmmsby4

How about the Shuttleworth Collection - some real 'antiques' of flying there

http://www.shuttleworth.org/

There is also what used to be known as the Mosquito Museum:

London's Imperial War Museum (of which Duxford is a branch) is currently closed for some repairs and upgrading - until July, but has a good aircraft collection:

The RAF Museum at Hendon and/or Cosford should 'fill the gap'

http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/

The Science Museum also has a small, but good collection of planes:

IF your route takes you further south, then during this past year I visited the museum at RAF Tangmere, here you can fly some plane simulators, culminating in a chance to pilot a Lightening Jet (for a small fee) - well worth it for any plane enthusiast!!

Hope you enjoy - if you can get to Duxford on one of the air shows, or the Shuttleworth Collection for one of their flying evenings, you will have a fantastic time!

Oh yes, nearly forgot...

For some fab history of Civil Aviation - if your visit is at the right time, then you can visit the buildings of Croydon Aerodrome on the first Sunday of every month:

http://www.croydonairport.org.uk/

And that reminds me that there is also a strong Aviation section at the Brooklands Museum - as Brooklands was the first home of AVRO:
