Hadrians wall

Does anyone have any experience at hadrians wall in December. Weather, sites, things to do? Also advice on cottages to rent for a week in the area. We know it will be cold but there are quite a few things to see and do. We Also know that it gets dark at 4 but that doesn't bother us. Thanks for all help.

Hi,

We note your earlier postings about your December travel plans.

No idea of your budgetary constraints so view below as ideas alone.

We suggest that you might to look at the following "thread" and the links within although the requirements differ from yours,

tripadvisor.co.uk/…40520233

An interesting read, but not edited for current accuracy about advertised businesses is:-

Self catering suggestions among several agencies are based on our personal location bias and only focus around Hexham and Corbridge:-

Luxury B&B. Dinner available.

We were snowed in for two successive years in periods of 3 to 4 days in December when we lived in Northumberland near Hadrian's Wall.

This year's weather forecast is as unpredictable as ever. Speculation about being colder than recent years, but that's the combined wisdom result of computer modelling and meteorologists.

We still use a pine cone for rain prediction.

Please note the Wall historical sites' have limited opening times in winter.

For example,

and

english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/h…

The seasonal bus service is also unavailable.

Regards

"Things to do" at Hadrians wall, in December, will definitely be very weather dependent!

But the wall has been there year-round, with mostly free access to the intrepid, for centries, of course.

Perhaps you should visit The British Museum (London) and reat the Vindolanda Tablets, to see how the Romans coped in the bleak midwinter....

Arriva operate hourly buses between Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne - service 685/X85 - but they serve the towns and villages on either side of the A69 rather than places on the Wall itself.

There are also regular trains between Carlisle and Newcastle.

If the weather is bad, I suggest a trip into Newcastle - the (free) Great North Museum (formerly the Hancock) has an extensive interactive display relating to Hadrian's Wall. I like the Star Shows, too, for which there is a small charge.
