Best town/village for 1 nt stopover bet. Oxford & Edinburgh

Hi all,

we are going to drive from Oxford to Edinburgh in August. Since it's such a long drive, we would like to break journey somewhere and stay overnight, preferably at the halfway (plus, minus) point. Could anyone suggest a good place to stopover with some interesting things to see. We don't need museums, churches or shopping. If the larger towns aren't that interesting, a quaint village would do too.

Thanks!

If you were to use the main route up the west side (M40 then M6) you pass close to the Lake District and the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales - both National Parks with interesting scenery, towns and village about half way in terms of time. (M6 junctions 37-40).

On main eastern route (M1, A1, A1(M) etc) Ripon would be around the half way point - small cathedral city and close to the Fountains Abbey/Studley Royal complex (ruins of abbey with landscape gardens which are a UNESCO World Heritage site) :

Eastern route, I'd suggest Knaresborough

Thanks CheresX. We will be staying in the Lake District on our way down so I'll check out Ripon.

Thanks also, Loughtonian. Knaresborough looks really nice and small enough to manage in a couple of hours.

Knaresborough definitely. Very attractive town, some nice pubs and places to eat, small enough that you could get at least a feel for it in a short time

Ripon area would be good - even Thirsk, Richmond, Northallerton, anywhere in that neck of the woods should be around halfway and don't take you miles off your route north.

It's 366 miles westbound via the M40 and M6, as compared to 384 via the M40 and M1/A1. Probably slightly quicker too.

I'd turn off for Liverpool.

Thank you flanneruk. We are most likely going to do a stop in Liverpool on our way down.

I would take A34 from Oxford, then M40 up to junction 10 then over to Northampton to pick M1 north, might as well take the eastern route (almost the same distance) on the way up and stay somewhere in or near York.
