Bristol Airport vehicle entrance fee

I have heard that drivers are now charged a fee to enter the airport grounds, even if they are merely dropping off passengers and then leaving again.

Is this true?

If so, how much is the fee?

There is nothing to stop people dropping passengers off on the approach road just before the filter lane for authorized vehicles...and that is the closest you can get to the departures doors. Of course if you as the driver want to get out and give everyone a hug & kiss then the traffic behind you will get very annoyed. The official 'Rapid' drop-off and pick-up point is at the far end of the terminal closest to the arrivals door.... and yes they are now charging even for a few minuets. The Bristol International Airport website has details.

I recently picked up passengers from Heathrow terminal 5 and simply used the free drop-off area to pick them up... anyone using the pick-up is forced into a multi-story car park and made to pay. Thank God we had arranged to use out mobile phones to co-ordinate..they took over an hour to get through immigration control etc. Good old Bristol averages 20 mins from plane to roadside.

There still exists the "Drop off 2" car park, which is free for 10 minutes but £4 if you exceed that. The official free solution - but no signs to it and a bit of a walk back to the terminal. Carry on past the terminal and the Express drop off car park entrance.

Express drop off charges £1 for up to 20 minutes. See link for map.

The drop-off car park 2 is further to walk from to the departures entrance than stopping outside the old terminal (on your left as you come to the first airport roundabout) there is a great turn round and lots of places to pull in for a while to unload your passengers too and walking along the (flat) sidewalk to the main terminal takes all of 4 minuets even with a wheeled suitcase.

But my folk are too lazy for that and we pull in just before the authorized vehicles only left filter lane... where the new motorbike parking area is (apparently). I figure, what is the worst that can happen... they tell you to move on. From there it is less than 100 meters to the departures door.

Is it possible to drop off free of charge at the Airport Tavern, just down the road from the airport, and from there walk to the terminal?

Yes but its a long- ish walk and the first bit is up quite a steep hill - why not follow the advice above?

If you are dropping off and have nothing behind you then we often just stop off in the road that goes in front of the terminal by a crossing - they definitely don't like you doing that however!
