My adult son and I will be flying into Heathrow on Saturday 17 August this year, arriving at 1.15 pm. We will hire a car at LHR and drive to Cambridge, our first stop on a two week driving holiday that will move, anti clockwise, around England and up to Edinburgh. At the end of the drive, we will return the car at LHR before having five nights in London, followed by the Eurostar to Paris.
We have three nights in Cambridge, staying at the Best Western Plus, The Gonville and would like to do the following:
> a punt ride to see The Backs
> a walking tour to see the main colleges and chapels
> weather permitting, a walk to Grantchester
> a pub meal at The Eagle (son is a war history buff!)
I would appreciate some local advice about the following:
> our sight seeing days are a Sunday and a Monday; would the punt tour and walking tour be less busy on the Monday or does it not make much difference?
>is the Official Cambridge Walking Tour a better bet than the Footsteps tour?
> as we will have a car, would it advisable to try and put all of the Cambridge sightseeing on the one day, and drive to see other towns like Bury St Edmonds, Kings Lynn or Ely on the other day?
From Cambridge, we will be driving on to York for three nights at The Groves. Is there a route that local experts would recommend that will make for more pleasant and scenic driving? We have the day to get there, so it doesn't have to be the fastest route.
Any tips would be most appreciated - thank you for your time.
