Visiting at new year

We are a party of four travelling from england , aged mid 40's , planning to spend new year in St. Peter's port and we are wondering whether any of the war museums are open over the holiday period. Also if there are any organised public celebrations on New Year's Eve.

We enjoy being outdoors and a good pub and walking is not a problem.

Any other helpful tips for a trip at this time of year would be helpful too, we are staying for 5 days so have time for maybe a trip to one of the other islands ?

Thank you in advance

Hi, it appears that all the Guernsey Museums and Underground Museum all appear to be closed over the winter period. The German Occupation Museum operates restricted hours but these are not published, I suggest you contact them direct on +44 (0)1481 238205. I would suggest visiting the Visit Guernsey website for info http://www.visitguernsey.com/places-to-visit.

I don't know where you're staying in St Peter Port but most establishments, Hotels and Pubs, all have New Years menus or party evenings so I would suggest you book if you have something special in mind. There isn't normally any public events as such and a quick Google search didn't throw anything up.

As regards what else to do it is going to be very dependent on weather, there are lovely cliff path walks, green lane walks, walks to Lihou Island (tides permitting) and strolls around town. There are loads of Pubs all over the island serving good food and beer.

Alderney and Jersey are both accessible by air but Herm and Sark are only accessible by sea and therefore you will be bound by the weather

I hope this helps but if you have any other questions please ask away.

Thank you for your advice and I think I will contact the museums direct as you suggest .

We will be happy just having some good walks and are hoping to be able to fly to either Alderney or jersey do you know if this would have to be booked in advance or once we arrive?

Also any recommendations for a good restaurant on New Year's Eve?

Thanks again

As it is New Year I would suggest you book in advance, Aurigny (http://www.aurigny.com/) operate up to 10 flights a day in both directions to Jersey and eight a day to Alderney - may be less over the festive period.

As regards restaurants there are so many good ones BUT these are likley to well booked up in advanace.

Check out http://www.guernseylovesfood.com/ and http://www.islandlife.org/eatingout_gsy.htm and then I think its going to be a case of seeing which ones have availabalilty. I can warn you though that it is likely to be dearer than normal as it is one of those times of the year when it seems everyone can charge what they like!

of course have a look rounf trip advisor, tripadvisor.co.uk/… some of my favouties are there in the first page - Pier 17, Petit Bistro, Da Nello, Nautique and Red Grill are all very good but once again prices are going to higher.

I really hope you enjoy your visit, the island is very pretty and hopefully welcoming.
