Jersey in early May Bank Holiday - where to stay

We are a group of 4 adults and 4 children (age ranging from 8 to early 60s), and will be travelling for the first time to Jersey during the early May bank holiday.

We intend to hire a car, and would like to be in a location where we can get dinner in the evening and not travel too long back to our accommodation.

We don't need to be at a beach, nor do we need to be in the main town of St Helier.

What's important is that we like to be somewhere 'central' so that we can drive the different attractions that we might want to go to.

Where do you recommend that we stay? And anyone has any recommendation for accommodation?

Jersey is only 9 miles wide by 5 miles long and so you are never going to be far from any of the attractions you might want to go to.

What sort of accommodation? How long are you staying for?

I have only been to Jersey once and stayed in St Helier.

I would say with the number of people you have in your party (who are not going to all fit in one car) and their age ranges, you would be far better staying in St Helier.

There is plenty to do in St Helier whereas some of the other areas of Jersey are rather remote with little to do nearby.

There are loads of places to eat and drink in St Helier, and lots of things to do. Also the central bus station is in St Helier with buses going all over the island so for those that don't want to go out by car they can jump on a bus.

We stayed at the Merton Hotel which is a short walk outside the city centre (5 minute walk).

It has a lovely swimming pool complex which the children particularly will love, and is right next to a nice park where the children to go and let off steam. I also remember it organized many activities for children and adults.

Note there are lots of narrow lanes in Jersey which makes driving round "hard work". Sometimes sitting on a bus while going round the island is more relaxing and gives you a chance to look at everything.

There are a number of buses that do circular routes round the island and this is a good way to see the whole island. if you have not been before.

Also high above St Helier is Fort Regent, a huge fort (which is now a leisure centre). It is well worth gong up there to walk round the huge old fort, but also to get great views over St Helier I think many people who visit Jersey don't go up Fort Regent but it is an amazing place.

Hi Kev & Family.

For a first visit, basing yourself in St Helier is not a bad idea, although there are some good hotels on the outskirts.

Since you've a few children with you look at the Merton as already mentioned, but also Morvan Hotels www.morvanhotels.com as they are very generous with families and only charge a minimal fee for Children sharing with Adults, unlike others who will charge up 75% of the Adult rate.

I would also take a look at perhaps the Samares Coast Hotel (owned by Morvans) or the Ambassadeur Hotel as they are just outside of St Helier but across the road from the beach so more of a 'holiday' feel than the town hotels. They also both have big car parks, which is a bonus - many town hotels either have no parking or a small number of very tight spaces.

If you wanted to venture into St Helier to eat you could leave the car at the hotel and have a glass of wine as a bus passes both hotels every 20 minutes right up until almost midnight, both directions. It takes about 10 minutes into town.

Let us know how you get on, and if you need any further help :)

Bex
