Staying in Chester close to Christmas

Hi all!

We've cashed in some tesco vouchers for train tickets, and we're thinking of visiting Chester for a night out close to Christmas.

It will be our first night away (out of the area completely) from our daughter, so we're looking to really make the most of the experience, especially with the time we're planning on going.

We're looking to perhaps stay at the central Premier Inn, around the 21st/22nd of December.

I have a few questions really, firstly, does anyone have experience staying in a Premier Inn so close to Christmas? Is the atmosphere nice and festive?

Also, can anyone suggest any festive places (markets, shows etc) we could visit whilst in Chester?

Lastly, looking for a comfy, old-fashioned Real Ale pubs to visit!

Any help would be appreciated, thank you :D

I can help with the pubs ;-)

The Marlborough Arms is a decent real ale pub on St John Street which is off Eastgate Street by the Eastgate Clock.

At the top of Lower Bridge Street is the Falcon which is in a Grade 1 Listed building, and further down Lower Bridge Street on right side of the road is the excellant Brewery Tap which has an amazing interior and excellant ale (it's the brewery tap for Spitting Feathers Brewery). http://www.the-tap.co.uk/

At the bottom of Lower Bridge Street, also on the right and in a lovely old building is the Bear & Billet. http://bearandbillet.com/

On the other side of the cathedral on Northgate Street is the Pied Bull.

All five of these real ale pubs are worth a visit, especially the Brewery Tap and the Bear & Billet.

Cheers

Glad someone else could tell you about the pubs! As far as things to do... we are hoping that the Christmas Fair and Big Wheel will be returning to the castle forecourt as that proved very popular last year. There will be a pantomime at the Forum studio. Unfortunatey the Midwinter Parade will be earlier in December and the big carol concerts seem to be the weekend of 17/18th so if you could that weekend you might have more choice of events. More events may be announced a little closer to the time. One thing is for sure, the whole city should be full of shoppers so there will be lotsof Christmas atmosphere.

Do hope you enjoy Chester whatever you decide to do.

Thank you ChesterBuff!

These tidbits are of great help! I did originally want to stay earlier in December, but baby sitters and cheap hotel prices have dictated our date so close to Christmas, you see :)

We'll definitely try and potter down to the castle forecourt and have a look around. I'm sure the atmosphere will be festive, no matter what, I think Chester is quite similar to Manchester in that respect... lots of people out, having a cheerful Christmas knees-up!

Thank you so much for the info :D X

Not sure about the streets in Chester being like Manchester, but you are right about the atmosphere in pubs and restaurants. I used to live in Chester, but now closer to Manchester and I think the atmosphere in Chester is just idyllic after the shoppers have gone. Looking at all the decorations etc in darkened streets. Wonderful. You're going to love it.

Have a great time.

Sadly, according to this weeks local news...the big wheel and fair is not happening at the castle, concentration will be on Christmas market/fair in the town hall area.

Would second The Falcon and the bear and billet. Both lovely old fashioned pubs.
