Where to go AFTER Chester...

Hello. We will be staying in a cottage just outside Chester for a week early in December 2014. Our initial plan was to go on to Marseille for our son's wedding after that, but the wedding has been postponed. So now we have four or five days to be somewhere else (son and fiancée are joining us). We need to stay close enough to Manchester airport to get there in a couple of hours unless we fly open-jaw out of Dublin, which is the place we're first considering moving to. But we also love York and we're going in December because my husband has always wanted to be in England near Christmas.

Thanks for staying with me through all of that! Any suggestions?

How about North Wales.

Some lovely towns and Castles. Seaside or country, less than an hour from Chester .

Well worth spending the run up to Christmas in.

Thank you all so much for the information and especially the links. I'd been poking around for good links, but they are of uneven quality for the kind of information we want, so I really appreciate this!

Hi Snowball,

if you like Christmas as we do. In December we visit Keswick in the Lake District the town looks so nice and the hotels are all decorated. We usually stay at the Skiddaw hotel on the main street, the owner has several hotels and we also like the Lodore Falls hotel, I think they had 20+ Christmas trees in 2012. Ambleside also make a big effort with Christmas but I don't know any hotels. Where outside of Chester will you be staying?

Keith.

What about York? Or Manchester? The Christmas Market is unmissable if you want Christmasy stuff!

Thanks very much for the alternative suggestion. We will certainly look into it. The first week we'll be in a cottage in Tarvin, and we'll have a car, though I'm sure we'll take the bus into Chester when we go there. We do both LOVE Christmas, so your suggestion is right up our street. We general do what we blithely refer to as our "cathedral and pub tours" when we can get to the UK, but this time we also want the Christmas markets.

To PennyW: thank you as well. We both love York...I wish we could live there. But because of that, we've been there a few times on past trips, so we thought we would try something new. We do plan to drive into Manchester for the Christmas Market for certain.

Agree with Manchester ,good city for a day out, equally good to visit for the markets.Know it's a long way off,but Manchester is expensive to park centrally, certainly for a period of hours, you might want to consider the train,or look at options of parking further out and using tram system, either way you have plenty of time to plan.

Just to clarify "long way off".... in terms of not until December, as opposed to distance, which is only 35/40 minutes ('ish) by car
