southern & southwestern coast of England

Greetings from New Jersey, USA. My husband & I (senior citizens but young at heart) plan to re-visit the coast of England in mid-Sept. for about 7 days. We did this several years ago & it rained every single day. Hoping for sunshine this time.

We'd appreciate any tips on which coastal towns to visit or use as hubs. We like little historic villages, Medieval history, good food, coastal scenery and our budget is flexible so we can treat ourselves to rather lovely places to stay overnight. We will probably use Portsmouth as our starting point and head west, returning to the Winchester area before leaving for home.

Any suggestions, especially for hotels and/or B&Bs would be great.

Hi - I would agree with everything in post 1. Some great suggestions and it cuts your driving time almost in half - more time to enjoy the scenery rather than spent getting there.

For Dorset historic villages you are spoilt for choice. A few options

Milton Abbas - the owner of the Abbey had the village demolished and rebuilt it further away from his home. This was in the 18th century. The main street is made up of white cottages with thatched roofs and very picture postcard.

Cerne Abbas with the famous giant and the abbey gatehouse.

Abbotsbury - a walk up to St Catherine's chapel gives you superb views of the coast.

Tyneham - this was evacuated during WW2 and the villagers never returned. The area was used to practice the D-Day landings. Check www.dorsetforyou.com for opening times.

For some medieval history King Edward was muredered by his step-mother at Corfe Castle in the 10th century. He was then buried for a while at Shaftesbury abbey. This was founded in 880 but destroyed in King Henry 8ths time. However the audio guided tour of the ruins is very worthwhile.

Intrigued by what was said in post 1 and 2....

Anyway, just west of Dorset, Devon starts, and given what you state as your interests, you can do worse than visit the Jurassic Coast in West Dorset and East Devon, where I would especially recommend Lyme Regis, Beer, Branscombe (great cliff top walk between the latter two, allow an hour), Topsham, Lympstone, and lovely places inland too.

Moving further west, do explore Dartmoor!

Good suggestions for places to stay and eat are on www.eastdevonexcellence.co.uk

Enjoy!
