First trip to Cornwall from Southampton by train.

We are planning to take the train from southampton to Cornwall but have no idea which are the most ideal towns to visit. No plan to rent a car but would rather use two legs or public transport to move around. Please recommend towns of best interest and beautiful sights.

You will need a car to get about in Cornwall definitely.

Cornwall has trains and buses, so although not as covenient as a car, it is perfectly possible to visit using public transport.

Lack of and expensive parking is another common complaint in the smaller towns, and another reason not to drive.

I would base yourself in a larger town for more public transport links.

I suggest you look in your guidebook and decide what best suits what you'd like to see.

Can I presume you don't really mean "towns" but "places" because there are many places you might visit that aren't not a twin.

Once you've decided where to visit over what time period, that will determine if a car or public transport or walking is best.

Also, what time year are you planning to come, and for how long? Do you like walking, visiting historic houses, gardens, ancient sites, mining heritage.. .?

If you have no idea at all, then St Ives and Falmouth are probably good starting points for you - have a look at them as they are very different but both are lively, pretty and by the sea as well as on a train line. Plenty of things to do nearby. Penzance has slightly better transport connections than St Ives but is more of a working town - however if you want to explore the far West without a car it's probably a slightly better option.

Hi there

If you are arriving by train, then you have various options. The main line runs down though Cornwall with various stations in the larger towns with four branch lines running to Looe, Newquay, Falmouth and St Ives. St Austell makes a good base for the trains, it's on the main line, has a branch line link to Newquay and decent bus services to various places.

But where to stay, depends upon what you want to see and do. A list of the best things to do and see in Cornwall would fill the forum so you need to do some research first. An excellent guide to Cornwall is the " Best of Britain - Cornwall & Isles of Scilly" which divides Cornwall into several sections and offers 100s of ideas for days out, what to see, pubs, restaurants and attractions.

The book is published by www.crimsonpublishing.co.uk and its ISBN number is 978-1-85458-424-3, cost here in the UK is £12.99

Is there a train from Southampton to St. Ives? Or do I have to take the train from London, Paddington to St. Ives.

You can get a train from Southampton to Reading, where you can change to a Penzance train, Much easier than going through London
