family holiday august with older kids

Hi I am planning a week in Cornwall in august with sons 13,15,and 20. We like self catering but within easy walking distance to nice places to eat. ideally we would like to be close to somewhere with fishing from pier or rocks for my husband and on the coast with good walks. We will have a car and will hit the main attractions but like days to just chill out and potter around. Are St Ives, Port Merryn or Megavissey good options? Any help very welcome.

St Ives is everyones favourite place at present and would certainly tick your boxes. It will be very busy in August though, as will most places in Cornwall, but St Ives does get crowded. Port Merryn?? There is a St Merryn nr the North coast which has many lovely beaches nearby, not sure if that's where you mean.

Mevagissey is a much smaller (than St Ives) fishing village on the South coast. It has places to eat and drink. Good fishing opportunities from the harbour and local boat trips. The coast path is accessible from any where on the coast in Cornwall so that won't be a problem.

St Ives is further down in Cornwall than Mevagissey so would potentially involve more driving once you are here to see the rest of Cornwall, though there is plenty to do in WeST Cornwall from St IVES as well.

St Ives will be really busy in August, and parking can be a problem. St Merryn is a quiet place with not a lot going on, so possibly not the best if you want to leave the car at home one day. Mevagissey will be quieter than St Ives, and quite a few places in the village to wander round.

All have decent walking, and you can fish from all of them (or pretty close), although again I would sway towards Mevagissey.

Have you considered Looe.

It ticks all your boxes and has a great fishing harbour.

St Ives is beautiful but we try to avoid it in August.

The last time we went in August you were shoulder to shoulder in the street, beach etc...

Fine for a day trip but not sure if you'd want to cope with it daily.

Mevagissy is small whereas Looe has much more to offer.

There are nice coves around Mevagissy if you like the beach too.

Falmouth has lots to offer but isn't as picturesque as St Ives etc...

Fowey is stunning.Plenty of holiday rentals.Overlooking one of Cornwalls prettiest harbours. There is fishing, boat trips, walks, restaurants and traditional Cornish pubs.

It holds a regatta in August which is brilliant. The red arrows, carnival etc...

Hope this helps
