Best restaurant in St Ives area

Hi there,

We'll be coming down to Cornwall at the beginning of July and I'd like to book somewhere quite special for a meal. Are there any michelin starred restaurants in that area which aren't too pretentious?! Or just a nice restaurant people could recommend. I know we're in the wrong part of the world too, but preferably not a seafood restaurant, just one that serves a good selection of meat and fish dishes and has great desserts! Don't mind driving up to an hour to get there.

Thanks for your time.

Hi fightinfit, There are only Two Michelin star restaurants in Cornwall. They are, Rick Steins in Padstow & Viners in Summercourt, just outside Newquay.

Personally I would not recommend either. Both grossly overpriced.

I gather you are staying in St. Ives. If I where you I would stay there to eat. Lovely romantic setting & some fantastic Restaurants.

Try & catch the sunset.

Hope you have a great time.

Hi

As well as Trip Advisor I also find this website fab for looking for good restaurants:-

http://www.eatoutcornwall.com/

I love TA for the reviews and then check out this website more for pictures than anything. Some restaurants also have website links or menus.

I agree with Lilly that there is little point driving miles because you will get fab restaurants in St Ives even though they may not be Michelin starred. They aren't all seafood restaurants either. If you fancy a great Italian then try Caffe Pasta. Not quite sure what kind of cuisine you are after but I am sure there will be something for you in St Ives.

Thanks that's great advice. I'll look around St Ives then, thanks. We're probably looking at somewhere that does nice meat dishes and has great desserts and yes a great view would also be perfect!

If you want a restaurant on the harbour then you need to be looking at On Shore, Caffe Pasta, Ocean Grill, The Alba, The Beach or Cafe Coast. There may be more but can't remember off the top of my head. I have to say though that I went to On Shore and had some seriously pap food there last year and I wouldn't go again. I have always been happy with Caffe Pasta (Italian) and Ocean Grill (Mediterranean) - both have plenty of meat dishes and do great desserts.

There is also Hobblers but that gets mixed reviews and Hub Bar (although this is more of a bar but does get some great reviews). My friend had food in Hub Bar last year and was seriously unimpressed. Check out the reviews and then try and find menus and pictures of the establishment on the other website and, hopefully, this will help.

if you want something a bit more special I'd recommend porthminster cafe - it has the most amazing location - right on porthminster beach, and does a very good selection of meat and fish dishes - admittedly there is more choice of fish than meat, but still a good choice of meat dishes daily ....... and the puddings are truly amazing

lots of the food is sourced locally, herbs grown in their own gardens, and even some of the booze is cornish

it's not michelin starred but it is very, very good - take alook at their web for a sample menu and see what you think

you will definately need to pre-book .... recommend sitting outside for the best atmosphere

I was at The Loft on Saturday night for the launch of local author Liz Kessler's latest book. Food and service were wonderful. Have also had lunch there a couple of times and really enjoyed that as well. Book a table outside on the terrace if the weather is good.

St Andrew's Street Bistro gets my vote every time. I love it to bits. Two glasses of wine and I think I'm in Provence! I also like Black Rock and Porthminster Beach Cafe a lot.

Restaurants in St Ives tend to be overpriced, for excellent food try The Balnoon Inn on the old coach rd. Lelant downs. It's very popular with both locals and tourists and you may have to book, we've never had a bad meal there in over 25 years.

Depends how you class overpriced. I don't think £20 for two courses of good quality food and a drink is overpriced, and I can't think of many restaurants in St Ives where you'd pay more than that.
