Winter Weekend in Derbyshire

Hoping for some tips??

We are staying at Broadmeadows Farm in Butterton in early December for a long weekend, 6 adults, 2 eight year olds and a 12 month old.

Are there any days out, attractions, walks, parks or general ideas as to what we can do?

Is there an indoor swimming pool nearby?

Many Thanks

It looks as if you are about 5 miles over the border into Staffordshire. The border is of course the River Dove with walks along the banks, not too steep. There is also walking on the parallel River Manifold, with cycle hire in Waterhouses (if it is open in the winter). Leek about 5 miles away has shops and probably a public swimming pool.

Looking at Viamichelin, Butterton seems to be a bit 'in the middle of nowhere' except for very pretty moorlands. Most 'tourist' attractions are going to be rather a drive away.

BUT if you have car(s) then some places you might like to visit, particularly with the kids, include:

Matlock Bath (but the Heights of Abraham sadly are now closed)

Tramway Museum at Crich - they have some santa specials at the week-ends in December: http://www.tramway.co.uk/

Stoke-on-Trent seems to have a number of things to see & do: http://www.visitstoke.co.uk/

The amazing gardens of Biddulph Grange - depends on your week-end though, they close on 19 Dec: nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-biddulphgrangega…

Enjoy the area and the lovely countryside, if it snows it will be especially beautiful.

You might want to check out Chatsworth (chatsworth.org/whats-on/…a-russian-christmas) and/or Haddon Hall (http://www.haddonhall.co.uk/visiting.htm), both of which will be specially decorated for Christmas...

They have a Christmas Fayre thingy at Chatsworth. I was intending to visit this weekend and report back (was staying with friends just south of Ashbourne), however a heavy snowfall on Friday night spannered the roads so I didn't fancy chancing the 15 mile hilly journey to get there. Enjoy! :)
