Seeking advice on trip centering on Greenways

Hello from the U.S. Husband and I are planning to visit UK next summer, traveling mostly by train. I especially want to visit Agatha Christie's home at Greenways and thought of staying in one of the towns where we could catch the ferry to Greenways. But also, once having done that, we thought of renting a car for a couple of days and visiting some places in Cornwall and Devon. Could someone advise on the best base for visiting Greenways and the aera, and suggest some other places in the area we should not miss? We like history, WWII, Sherlock Holmes, Fawlty Towers..... Have been in the area before, but not since 1971!

According to their website, you can get there by ferry from Dartmouth, Brixham or Torquay

All these will be busy in summer so book well in advance. Only Torquay has a main line station but all are relatively easy to reach by public transport. The South Devon area shoyuld be particularly interesting to an Anmerican interested in WW2 - I can provide more details if you wish, and an unmissable trip in the area is the "Round Robin" taking in a boat trip from Totnes to Dartmouth, ferry to Kingswear, steam train to Paignton and open top bus back to Totnes. You can join at any of the above and travel in either direction, but river trips are dependant on tides, so check locally.

Totnes would probably be a good place to base yourselves, or somewhere around Dartmouth.

You can also park at Greenway and walk to the house, which is a much less expensive option. Bare in mind you need to get an allotted timeslot to enter the house and must book parking:

As you like Sherlock Holmes make sure you visit Dartmoor, famously the setting for 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'!

Fawlty Towers was of course filmed in Torquay, so you might like to visit there or even visit the hotel that was once the inspiration for the brilliant series:

I have been recommended a visit to Buckfastleigh Abbey (home of Drake's drum) and a drive across Dartmoor to the stunning Lydford Gorge is wonderful, stopping on the way home for a real ale at Widdecombe in the Moor.
