Where to visit in Devon & Cornwall

Help! we are leaving Heathrow by car in early Jan 2012 and heading for Devon and Cornwall. We have to be back at Heathrow 9 days later and have planned for our last 4 nights in Umberliegh (Devon) and Bath so as to be nearer the airport. On the way down to Cornwall, we would like to pass by Stonehenge (but not necessarily stay nearby). The question is where would be worth stopping for the first night (happy to drive 3 hrs or so) and where would be the ultimate place to stay in the Cornwall area for say 3-4 days so as to be able to explore Cornwall and before heading back up to north Devon? I have read that Polperro, Falmouth, Looe, St Austell and Fowey are all lovely but just cant seem to make up my mind which place would capture the essence of Cornwall and make a good reconnoitre spot? Does anyone have any suggestions of general place and even better a lovely traditional inn or b&b or hotel at that location? Thanks

Quite a lot to answer here. So for a start--- in Cornwall, have a look at this, http://www.wagtailinns.com/ Also look at the reviews on TA. tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g191280-d1016… Its a lovely country inn situated in mid Cornwall, about 10 mins drive to the lovely riverside town of Fowey, about 30 mins to Polperro and Looe. St Austell is not a touristy town, though the nearby Eden Project and Heligan gardens are close and are popular visitor destinations. Eden would only be 10 mins from this inn also.

For a good choice of other inns/pubs to stay, look at this site. http://www.staustellbrewery.co.uk/hotels.html

Out of the places you have mentioned, I would say I think Fowey is the most pretty and has a real feel of a Cornish fishing town. Mind, we also recently stayed at Looe and that is also lovely.

You could take the A303 and see Stonehenge and then stop somewhere like Chard over night (about 2hrs 40 from Heathrow). That would leave you well placed for a lie-in and then on down to Cornwall.

If you need any help for the Umberleigh part of your stay let me know :-)

You should bear in mind that January is likely to be a very quiet period and some amenities will inevitably be closed.

Falmouth is another lovely estuary town, and being a bit further west, you could visit West Penwith from there, which is a must if you want a taste of the real Cornwall.

In response to ZebFrance: many parts of Devon, and selected parts of Cornwall, are 'open for business' 52 weeks of the year. In fact, for walkers who like a good pub with a roaring log fire, winter is ideal. Tip: avoid those with strongest emphasis on beaches, or very remote, and you will be fine. Suggestions would include St Ives, Fowey, Padstow, Dartmoor, East Devon and Jurassic Coast.
