Main Base

Apologies if this sounds a bit vague. But I havnt been to Devon for over 15 years and plan to go next August/September where there will be two couples (early 30's and a 3 year old) planning to book a cottage so I'm wondering where would you advise would be best situated. I would like a quaint largeish village/small town within easy reach of beach with nice pubs and a bit to do in the day time. A bit like Sidmouth I guess, but I spent every year of my childhood there. Yes I

did say it would sound vague

Any ideas peeps

Exmouth is nice and I can recommend Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays who have excellent marina apartments. They also have places in Sidmouth and other nearby towns and villages.

There are nice walks and boat and rail trips in the area.

Have a look here Olie: www.eastdevonexcellence.co.uk

East Devon (where you will find Sidmouth) offers all you are asking for, and with great access from M5. Beer, Branscombe, Sidmouth, Topsham on the coast, and inland places such as Colyton, Ottery St Mary, Otterton. And although technically just across the border in Dorset, Lyme Regis is great too, and Dartmoor is just 15 - 30 minutes (depending where in East Devon you are staying). Enjoy!

I'd look for somewhere reasonably close to Exeter. You're well situated for all parts of Devon.

Accommodation, you could do a lot worse than look at this place

All right, I admit I'm biased, been here several times, and I reckon it's the tops. Delightfully peaceful, and yet no more than a few minutes from the A38, M5 and other routes. She has a self-catering barn as well as B&B although her web site doesn't mention it, there's a review on that link.

How about Braunton (http://www.kissack.org.uk/braunton/) in North Devon? It is a bustling 'village' (it is apparently England's largest village) with lots of places to eat/drink and you are well placed for Braunton Burrows, Saunton Sands and Crow Point if you want to visit beaches.

You are 10-15 minutes from Barnstaple (which has regular trains to Exeter and Exmouth) and not far from Croyde, Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and all of the coastal delights of North Devon!

I'd recommend Dartmouth http://www.discoverdartmouth.com/ loads to to in the day that would suit all ages, lots of lovely places to eat in the evening plus local beaches. Coast and Country Cottages http://www.coastandcountry.co.uk/ have all sorts of accomodation in the area.

As well as Dartmouth add Salcombe to your list. Smallish town and lots of good beaches close by.
