Lovely things for children and best beaches in the North?

We are staying in Lynton next week - 2 families with children aged 5 and 7. We would like a nice balance of kids and adult activities (adult things will include walks and scenic things) so would like advice on the best kids/family activities as well a the nicest beaches to visit in the North. We are driving from Kent so would prefer not too much driving once we are in Devon. Thanks.

Nearest sandy beaches are Minehead, Combe Martin (but check if the beach has been replaced yet - was washed away in a storm a week or two ago) Croyde and Woolacombe. Lynmouth has its own pebble beach which is good for rockpooling.

All the beaches will involve some driving I'm afraid, because you've picked a very rocky and inaccessible bit of coast.

You could combine a visit to Croyde/Woolacombe with a visit to the Big Sheep, which the kids might enjoy, and Exmoor is not far - plenty of pony-trekking and other activities up there.

Some driving is fine - just not too far. thank for the advice. Rockpooling sounds great - ours will love that!

Go for a ride on the West Somerset Railway from Minehead - steam trains, very popular with children and adults

Combe Martin is not far. A small beach without the big tourist thing and rocks for rock pooling. It was my favourite as a child. Also there - is the Dinosaur and Wildlife park which is just brilliant for adults and children alike.

Another nearby is Lee Bay right by Lynton. Sandy little beach with safe swimming and nooks & crannies with marine things in. Again untouristy. You can drive through the Valley of the Rocks to it (about 15mins) and pay to park or walk along the path. Not strenous but fabulous views. Depends on the walking of the children.

There are coastal boat trips from Lynmouth. They would probably like the huge spurt of water from the river at the museum. Personally I think it's expensive but you can see it from the road.

What they will love is the cliff railway between Lynton & Lynmouth. There are also wildlife safaris running from there where you see secret bits of Exmoor by jeep.

Be sure to get the right Lee Bay as there are two. This one is up there with Lynton, the other you would leave from Lynmouth.

Illfracombe is going to be crowded at this time of year but has lots of boat trips and a Bristol Chanel Aquarium.

Woolacombe is a bit further but is a beautiful huge sandy surf beach, also going to be heaving & you would possibily be pestered for body boards, wet suits etc ;-)

If you do head out to Woolacombe, I would recommend Puttsburough beach, at the very end of the Woolacombe stretch. Beautiful family friendly beach with great cafe too.
