car rental in plymouth

Would like to rent a car for a day in July. Any suggestions for a good place to rent from? Would appreciate any tips about places to visit in the area. We plan to drive to St. Teath in Cornwall to do some family tree investigation. I have used map quest to check the drive and it looks like an easy one.

Just north of where you are going is Tintagel (King Arthur's) Castle,

If you go to http://maps.google.co.uk/

and type in "car hire plymouth"

It will give you the locations of the main car hire firms, choose one with the prices you like and a location to near where you are staying.

Europcar is a good choice as national compnay & office is close to Plymouth railway station - short walk. look at www.europcar.co.uk & tkae it from there. Checking cost is £33.93 if you prepay, and £37.32 if pay on arrival based on small car...unlimited kms. Note - office not open sundays.

You also have Hertz which is just off the Barbican (fairly central)but think price for Europcar is realistic one.

Journey time to St Terth area I wold expect in region 2 hours, maybe more depending on traffic. Must advise you that roads may be quire busy into Cornwall heading fro major resorts - especailly Fri & sats during school holidays a end of July. Suggest travel mid week Mon - Wed may be quietest. Nice drive on much of route when you avoid dual carraigeway. Suggest take a stop en route & admire countryside.

Tintagel is definately worth a visit - if you have time. Rather hilly though so must be quite fit to get to castle & some other parts.

Just to remind you that petrol prices are rising daily & are very expensive. Presently £1.10 or so per litre. Be aware in advance. No expensive road tolls in the area though.

You will need to pay £1 or so to return to Plymouth. You can go via Tamar Bridge (most direct route), or more scenic but add 20 miles plus to journey you can go on Torpoint Ferry which take you to suburbs of Plymouth centre. Operates 24 hours a day. During daytime every 15mins or so, and journey less than 10 mins. I quite like this route as most scenic - & you get good view of Plymouths Naval Dockyard from the ferry.

Take a good map as many routes are on smaller country roads & not so well signposted.
