Best area of Torquay?

We're looking to stay in Torquay for a few nights in May, but we're wondering which bit would be the best part to base ourselves in. We want to stay somewhere with a gorgeous sea view, as close as possible to a not-too-busy beach. We also want to avoid any tacky arcade-type areas. Any advice much appreciated!

The Premier Inn sits on the corner of the seafront /Belgrave Road and although easy walking distance into the centre of Torquay (about 5 mins walk along the seafront) it is far enough out of the centre to not be in the rowdy part. Don't know whether you can request a seaview though as they reckon rooms are allocated on arrival.

We had a lovely large room there and had a side sea view.

We have also stayed in The Livermead Cliff Hotel twice, which has some good seaview rooms and an outdoor swimming pool which overlooks the sea. It has a little beach right on the doorstep.

The Osborne hotel at the beautiful Hesketh Crecent is my only choice when in Torquay. It is such a special setting overlooking the sea from an elevated position and a Grade II listed. For a few nights the hotel is your best bet but for longer stays there is the Osborne club located in same building for self catering. We have been many times and just love it. Go for the sea views!

There are many - but Babbacombe is particularly spectacular! There are many accommodation providers actually on the Babbacombe Downs, and adjacent to Babbacombe Beach, ranging in prices and facilities, all with stunning views. Lots of walks and attractions are all just minutes away. Well worth investigating.

I agree with the previous poster, Babbacombe is very nice along 'The Downs'

many hotels will have sea views as it overlooks Lyme Bay. Don't be put off by the fact the same poster lives in Babbacombe and could be biased - they are accurate that the views are good. Babbacombe is not however within walking distance of Torquay, whereas the Livermead Cliff as mentioned by another poster is. Hotels that also spring to mind are Corbyn Head, Livermead House.

All these are situated a short distance from the town centre, but very walkable, or use the little land train.

Hope this helps.
