Where to base ourselves

We are hoping to have 7-10 days in our caravan in Suffolk at the end of April having never visited the county before. We are wondering where to base ourselves for good coastal walking, bird watching, biking etc and what are the must do's in the County. We are looking forward to visiting an area of the UK that will be completely new to us and thank you for any advice that you can give .

11. Re: Where to base ourselves

Hi again,

Walks in the area:- From Hollesley, head to the coast and walk south to Bawdsey or north to the River Ore.

With a cycle you could use the minor roads and just beyond Bawdsey catch the ferry across to Felixtowe.

North of Hollesley is Rendlesham Forest that surrounds the disused Woodbridge Airfield.

If you are prepared to drive to a walk then around Tunstall Forest and Orford or around Snape starting from The Maltings, further afield there is Minsmere RSPB reserve and also a nice walk from the National Trust site at Dunwich Heath through to The Eels Foot Pub at Eastbridge and back (90 mins round trip not counting time at pub!).

Cycle rides:- Hollesley to the pub at Ramsholt (plenty of routes depending on how far you want to go.

Hollesley to Sutton Hoo and on to Woodbridge. On your way back, just past Melton Rly Station and immediately after going over the river is a track going south west (that is supposed to be private but everybody uses it) that becomes a public footpath/bridleway and you can get as far as Shottisham hardly going on a road. It is easily doable on a hybrid bike.

Hollesley to Orford and back. Great café on river front (turn left when you reach the river and go about 50 metres).

If you are really fit or have a bike rack for your car you could get to Melton Station and take your bikes on the train (free for the bikes) north to Wickham Market or Saxmundham and cycle back. Trains leave Melton going north at 06:41 (ugh!), 0:7:57 and then 36 mins past the hour each hour until 15:36 (current timetable).

I use Ordnance Survey maps either 1:25000 Nos.231, 212 and 197 or 1:50000 Nos. 156 and 169.

Hope this helps
