Brighton beach with young children

We are coming to Brighton next week for a couple of days. If the weather is good we are planning to spend a day on the beach - however just read somewhere that the beach in Brighton isn't sandy - is this true? If so, kids will be disappointed as they are looking forward to building sand castles! Also are there facilities on/near the beach for changing/loos etc, and can you hire deck chairs?

Thanks

I think Brigton "beach" is all pebbles & shingle.

When the tide goes out you may get a little sand, but not much

Hi there,

Brighton beach is shingle I'm afraid!

There are toilets etc located along the beach, the bigger issue may be that the weekend of 7th is Pride and the place will be rammed, accommodation will be nigh-on impossible to find and the Saturday sees the parade so a lot of the roads are shut in the centre of town.

It's great fun - but perhaps not a welcome surprise!

Thanks for the replies, i'm sure the kids will still have a good time. We arrive midweek and leave on Friday so will avoid the crowds !

If sand matters, there are places a bit further west which have more than Brighton itself - eg Worthing, Littlehampton, Bognor... Google them and you'll get pictures. All have shingly bits, but they may be worth a look. Travel is easy - see www.southernrailway.com or www.stagecoachbus.com/timetables.aspx…

Too late for your break, hope you had a good time, but just to add to the last post our favourite beach near Brighton with sand is Shoreham beach. Easy to get to by car, or on the Coastliner 700 bus, about half a mile west of Shoreham town centre off W Beach Road. There is plenty of sand when the tide is out, a small hut selling food, drink and beach toys. Also only £1 to park the car for the day.

May be useful if you make another visit in the future.
