West Hampstead tube (metro) south to Green Park on the Jubilee line. Change there to Victoria line (south) for Victoria. Or get out and get the 38 bus for lovely views of London landmarks. From Victoria go to the main rail station (just follow the signs) and get a (preferably) fast train to Brighton. That will take about 50 mins. Allow about 2 hours door to door. There are other routes but this is fast and convenient. For prices and other useful info best to go direct to Transport for London's (tfl) website for London tubes and buses (phone in UK 0207 7222 1234 and Nationalrailenquiries for trains elsewhere in the UK. Hope that helps.

Train from West Hampstead to Clapham Junction, change there for train to Brighton

Or West Hampstead Thameslink to Farringdon, change there for train to Brighton.

There is no need for complication, as in some if the suggestions above. There are direct fast trains (no changes) from West Hampstead to Brighton. If you miss one of the direct trains, take any FCC service to St Pancras, where you get a same platform connection.

Yes, use the First Capital Connect direct services from West Hampstead Thameslink! Otherwise, FCC change at either St Pancras or Farringdon (no platform change required).

rcspiers is right of course..apologies - was forgetting about direct. Not fast though by any means as it stops at around 14 stations on that route so takes about same time but a lot less hassle than my suggestion! Watch out for weekend engineering works on any UK train journey. check in advance as though the trains still run the journey times are affected when works are planned.

When are you travelling?

Scheduled work is posted to the train operating company websites as well as the National Rail site - but rarely ever more than 12 weeks ahead.

Or you can type the words "engineering works" into the browser in the UK and all the rail networks will come up. You can do this before leaving for your travels or on the road - sometimes repairs are done at fairly short notice on busy commuter lines like London/Brighton. Don't let it put you off - a bus is always provided by the rail company for the diverted part so you do get there.

The only dates to watch in May are Sunday 4th May, Sunday 25th May and the weekend of 31st May/1st June. On all those dates the service is not operating through Central London so you would need to cross Central London by Underground.
