Day trip to Paris? (or overnight)?

Staying in Braintree for couple of weeks and thought while we are there we could take a day trip or overnight trip to Paris. What would be the best way to get there? We have a car but I would only drive to catch plane/train etc, not drive in Paris!

Could we fly from Stansted?

Any help much appreciated. (we're from Australia, so travelling long distances for a short trip is normal for us, w think nothing of driving for 9 hours to watch a game of Aussie rules football and than driving 9 hours back home again!)

See www.eurostar.com , a fast train service from St pancras station. 2 hrs to central Paris, usually beating most flights, so very few flights compete.

No Paris flights from Stansted - only Luton, London City, Heathrow and the Eurostar. Can't see how you could get to any of them for a day trip though an overnight trip is a possibility.

As an alternative to departing from St Pancras, you could drive to Ebbsfleet International Station near Dartford and pick up the Eurostar from there. One thing about this, however, is that there are often queues for the tolls at the Dartford Crossing on the M25 so leave plenty of time.

Thanks for your replies, when I looked at the web for the Ebbsfleet Station it then talked about connecting from other stations and it looks as if we could catch a train from Colchester and have a ticket booked for a colchester to Paris journey so will look more into that.

The connection from Colchester to Ebbsfleet will have you taking a train from Colchester to London Liverpool St, then (probably) the tube to London St Pancras to pick up the fast SoutheEastern Trains service to Ebbsfleet to pick up the Eurostar

It seems a bit pointless - you're better off getting on the Eurostar at St Pancras itself since you'll be routed through it anyway

Personally I would take a train from Braintree to Liverpool Street (direct services roughly hourly) and the tube from there to St.Pancras. That journey will take about 1.5 hours so a day trip to Paris is doable, but it would be more pleasant to have an overnight stay in Paris

Thanks Pintpot, thats sound very doable for us, even though we have no idea about tube trains etc we are in London for just a few days before we head to Braintree so hopefully they won't seem so daunting after that!
