Where can I take a 100-year-old for a grand afternoon tea?

My grandmother has just turned 100 and I want to take her out for a memorable afternoon tea. She lives in South Woodford and is not keen on going into Central London. She would like to go somewhere slightly more rural like Epping, Loughton or maybe Ongar (but no further). But I can't find anywhere grand/ posh for the occasion. Can anyone suggest anywhere - maybe a country house hotel? - but not too far for her to travel? Thanks!

I dunno about the hotel but congratulations to your Gran. Hope the Queen has not been to busy recently to write to her.

I'm not sure how far out this is, but several people have recommended it to me. I haven't made it there yet, though!

It's in Stock, near Billericay.

There's a review on TA of this place in Woodford Green:

For really grand places I suspect you'd have to go into the countryside or into central London.

Is Dedham (Constable country) just north of Colchester too far? Wilkinsons the jam makers have a nice tea shop there, the Essex Rose.

Congrats to your Nan and a very happy birthday to her......

You could have a look at Mulberry House Country Hotel located just outside of Ongar on their website [www.mulberry-house.com]

It dates back from 1767 and was originally built for a squire.Hotel has a lake and 22 acres of land.I've not been, but my mum attended a wedding there a couple of years ago and she loved it and on the Sunday (after wedding on Sat),an afternoon tea was taken on the terrace which she said was very reasonably priced and lots of it.

Hope you both have an enjoyable day out wherever you decide to go and once again congratulations to your Nan on reaching such a great age!!x

Just answered on your other thread:

Otherwise, if YOU can stand the drive, take her up to London to the Savoy, Claridges, Langham or The Ritz!

(PS, Savoy has/had private parking, if that helps any!!)

How about Marygreen Manor just outside Brentwood? They do an afternoon tea. Never tried it but have heard good reports about it.

They do dinner very well there and is our favourite treat place around.

The building has some history.

congratulations to your Gran,

I would recommend Marriott Hotel in waltham abbey where they do a few different kinds of afternoon tea.

i think prices are quite reasonable but you might want to check first.
