Transportation from Essex to Dublin

We are hoping to travel from Essex to Dublin without flying. I realize it involves a ferry. The ferry from the Ireland Port is not a problem but how difficult is it to get from Essex to the ferry terminal which would take us to Ireland. How long is the crossing?

Thanks so much for any information you could give to me. Mona

You don't say where you will be staying in Essex, but the best option would be to get the train up to Holyhead in North Wales and the ferry from there to Dublin.

Cheapest option is to get the Sail Rail ticket.

More info can be found here: virgintrains.co.uk/tickets-offers/… and here: http://www.seat61.com/Ireland.htm

It's not difficult as such, it's just a long way.

Colchester to Holyhead is probably a 6 hour drive, for example, not allowing for stops or traffic delay

A fast ferry from Holyhead takes under two hours, a conventional one a bit over 3.

Typically it's a train to Holyhead then ferry from there.

To put it in perspective, a flight from Southend is 1hr 20 minutes

Where in Essex are you starting from--it's a big county. In almost all cases it will be quicker to travel via London. We have done it in the past and it's a long day but perfectly feasible and certainly different from the up then down flight from Stansted!
