Where to stay in the Cotswolds?

Making my new itinerary through England and wanting to stay for 3-4 days in the Costwolds. What city/town would you recommend as the most representative or the most beautiful of the Costwolds? Cheltenham? Bourton-on-the-water? Stow-on-the-Wold? Any other?

I want to know the Costwolds as best as I can with the time I have available. Would you recommend stay on a city/town as a base an doing day-trips to other towns or moving every day to different towns?

Tell me more about this outstanding place where I would love to be RIGHT NOW!!!

Thank you!

maroargentina

it's very difficult to suggest just one - there are many beautiful villages in the region!

chipping campden has already been mentioned as a possible base. if you are looking for others, i would suggest burford, broadway or winchcombe - all are lovely spots. my advice would be to pick a hotel/b&b that you like the look of and then take it from there.

f you want to stay in small village, consider Snowshill or Colne.

if you really want to get out and see the Cotswolds, please consider doing some walking. the walks are stunning, particularly around the Snowshill, Stanton and Broadway area - hills involved! there is a relatively flat walk between Upper and Lower Slaughter.

Good luck planning!

The thing is that I would really like to walk from town to town If there are towns located not many kilometers away from others. I can´t really find distances between towns on the internet.

What do you think I could do in 3 days?

http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/cotswold/sites.asp?PageId=32

Lots of info there - routes, distances, places to stay, etc.

By the way, if you google 'walking xxxxx' where xxxx is the Dales or Lakes or wherever, you are bound to get useful sites.

Those areas are walkers paradises, and there are many Trails - eg, Coast to Coast, Inn Way, etc. Some of which have bag carrying services, which will take your luggage on to your next stop.

I would choose Chipping Camden although I do like Burford and Broadway.

I really liked Chipping Camden, so you will enjoy your stay there.

Here is a map for the Slaughters Walk.

A wonderful gastro-pub with sweet rooms is

the Horse & Groom in Upper Oddington. Simon and Sally are the owners and their chef, Jason is fabulous!

Breakfast UMMMM is included in the room rate. Open for lunches and dinners. Lots of locals eat there. A treasure. I especially love the salmon gravelax and their beef with peppercorn sauce. All home made with local produce and meats.

Do be aware that it is not always easy to navigate the footpaths unless you have written instructions or are experienced at reading the maps. The "Cotswold Way" is pretty well waymarked and I found the walk from Winchcombe/Stanton/Broadway/Chipping Campden to be lovely. About 15 miles total, with hills! If buses cooperate, however, from Stanton to Chipping Campden would be about half the distance with spectacular views and plenty of time to amble.
