Dates vary somewhat because different education authorities and private schools may all set different holiday dates. Mid July will see most of the children in England out of school but I've never found it a problem myself.

I would never choose to holiday in UK from last week of July until early September, and I live here in the Cotswolds. Yes there are more families around but more importantly prices are considerably higher, things book up very quickly. Another consideration is that the weather in June is often the best, the countryside is looking at its most attractive and the daylength is at its greatest giving you more time to enjoy.

Also let me recommend Winchcombe as a small town to use as a centre for the northern Cotswolds. Some great B&B,restaurants and walking.
