5 day trip to central England

We will be arriving by cruise ship at Dover May 3 and leaving for Istanbul on May 8. We would like to see Stonehenge, Stratford upon Avon, the Cotswolds (don't know which towns but I love the name Chipping Campden <g>) and maybe if there is time go into Wales to see a castle, but at this point I don't know if there even is a castle within driving range; I'd love to see Conwy but that may be too far.

We're thinking of staying in Bath as a sort of central location with a really nice B&B for our 52 anniversary. Is Bath our best place to stay? We're thinking about staying at Three Abbey Green in Bath. Bath seems like a great place by itself but I don't know that much about the area so there may be a better place to stay for 4 days in a central location. We've been to London many times but never been out into the countryside, or at least not since we drove to Edinburgh over 10 days in the 70s.

So my question is, I guess, what should we make as our central point? We will have a car and have budgeted for a wonderful vacation for our 52nd anniversary

Bath is a nice place, but it is not central for the places on your wishlist. It is a bit too south west. Stonehenge and the Cotswolds should still be easily reachable though. Southern Wales (which I am not familiar with) would be in easy reach from Bath. I agree that Conwy and the other castles of North Wales would be a bit too far.

If you'll have a car and want to see the Cotswolds, why not stay there? That's more the B & B experience, as they are all small villages, some with only one street. Chipping Campden is very nice, as is Broadway, and many other towns.

Oxford is nearby, if you wanted a town.

How are you departing for Istanbul? (which airport?)

Hi there

The Cotswolds has some beautiful towns and villages such as Broadway, the Slaughters, Bibury and Bourton on the Water so it would pay to do a bit of research before heading there rather than picking a place because of its name.

As far as a base is concerned, wherever you choose, Cotswolds or Bath, will still mean a drive to some of the sights on the list. Bath is close to the Cotswolds and to Stonehenge but not so close to Stratford, whereas if you stay in the Cotwolds, you'll be closer to Stratford but further from Stonehenge and Bath. Conwy is too far really for a short time frame but had you thought about visiting Warwick Castle, it's not that far from Stratford.

Are you the same people who are docking on the Isle of Portland the day before? (2/5/14)

Stay in Chipping Campden as your Cotswolds base - but after, head to SW Shropshire and The Welsh borders for emptier roads, unspoilt towns and ruined castles : Clun and Montgomery spring to mind.

Look carefully at the Warwick Castle web site before deciding to visit. Some people love it, some find it far too commercialised. Another castle not far from Stratford on Avon is Kenilworth Castle which, though it's a ruin, is of historic interest (medieval and Elizabethan eras in particular).

If you do decide to stay in Bath the central (downtown) area isn't particularly car friendly and parking's very limited. Oxford similarly.

Commercialied or not, it's still a castle surely.

+1 on Chipping Campden. We drove there from Lewes after a music festival and treated it as our home base for the Cotswolds. Lots of other small towns are easily accessible from there. We spent a day wandering sans map from town to town - absolutely charming. Stratford-upon-Avon is an easy drive from Chipping Campden as well.

Well it's been over a week and the OP hasn't come back with any additional information or even a thank you for all the help they've been given on both their threads.
