Thatched Cottages in the Cotswolds

Hi

I will be driving my cousin and his wife around the Cotswolds on Saturday 17th May. They are staying in England from New Zealand. His wife has never been to England before and would love to see a thatched roof. They are staying in Bristol because that is were my cousin grew up.

They want to see some Cotswold villages not too long a drive from Bristol. I was thinking Castle Coombe, Biddestone, Corsham then onto Lacock. Does anyone know if there are any thatched roofs in these places. I have been to these places many times and I do not think I have ever noticed the roofs.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

There are very few thatched roofs anywhere in the Cotswolds because of the abundance of limestone but there is about one thatched cottage each in Castle Combe, Biddestone and Lacock, if memory serves me well.

Chipping Campden 66 miles from Bristol and the following villages have lots of Thatch.

Chipping Campden over 20, Bretforton 15, Norton 15.

Nearer to Bristol but not the Cotswolds Letcombe Bassett and most villages in Wiltshire have Thatch.

It's a different direction, but I was in the New Forest around Burley last week, I guess that's about 90 minutes away from you, and the area was festooned with picture postcard thatched cottages.

Ps you could of course combine a visit to the new forest with Salisbury and Stonehenge, should that be of interest as its pretty much on the way. Booking now needed for Stonehenge unfortunately.

Thank you for your posts.

I think they want to see Castle Coombe so hopefully we will see at least one thatched roof on our tour.

If all else fails my Mum in Law showed me where a beautiful picture postcard Thatched Cottage is tucked away in the suburbs of Bristol.

Hope fully the sun will be shining for our tour. I took them on a tour of Somerset last Saturday, Chew Valley Lake, Cheddar Gorge (although we did not stop too commercialised now) Wedmore, Somerset Levels and Cream Tea in Wells. It was a lovely day.

Thanks again for your help.

You don't need to divert from your route. There's some in Corsham (Google is your friend).

Incidentally, Corsham might prove of additional interest to your visitors as it's standing in for Cornwall in the new version of "Poldark", filming there last week. Expect a Doc Martin/Port Isaac influx of visitors in due course...

And, dare I suggest that ...

No you may not :-) Spam and self promotion is not allowed here. Pity you didn't stop after the first paragraph which I'll repeat for the OPs benefit in the likely event your post is removed.

Minster Lovell in the Cotswolds has a number of thatched cottages to be seen on an easy stroll along its little high street. It is a beautiful village with plenty of sight seeing features and a wonderful 12th Century Pub The Old Swan. Also visit the impressive ruins of the old Minster Lovell Hall. Plenty of photo ops.
