Sunday afternoon and evening in cheltenham

Hi

Family of 2 + 2 teens will be in Cheltenham from Sunday to Tuesday over Spring Bank holiday for a wedding on the Monday. Looking for something to do Sunday afternoon and place to eat Sunday night (Italian if possible). I know it's Gloucester Tall ships weekend but after a drive from Sheffield, is this too out of the way?

Gloucester is 8 miles from Cheltenham and about a 20 minute drive (in good traffic conditions) so not far out of your way and a direct route. The tall ships would be a good way to spend some time in Gloucester.

I only have experience of restaurants in Cheltenham but Giannis Italian http://www.giannicheltenham.com/ is well reviewed on Tripadvisor and there are always the chains such as Ask, Pizza Express, Prezzo, Strada, Zizzi, Jamie Oliver.

Cheltenham is good for shopping, wandering around the gardens (Imperial Gardens - there may be a band playing on the Sunday afternoon / Montpellier gardens), parks (Pittville) etc. Lovely architecture too and the Montpellier District/The Suffolks is very pleasant to wander around with individual shops, coffee shops, pubs etc

At the lower end of the High Street is The Brewery http://www.thebrewerycheltenham.co.uk/ where there is a Cineworld and more restaurants.

There is also the Holst Birthplace Museum in the town although the main Art Gallery and Museum is being rebuilt and may be closed to the public at the moment.

Have fun!

Don't even look at chain restaurants - Gianni's every time!

This Sunday is the last night of the jazz festival, and there is a free stage so you could take in some free jazz in montpellier park and ask Italian is literally across the road from there. Alternatively Cheltenham outdoor lido opens this weekend, so you could go for a swim, if you have the energy after your drive!!

If you do go to Gloucester for the Tall Ships (it was definitely worth visiting last time around) I recommend parking in one of the car parks in the centre of town and walking to the docks. It's only about 10 minutes walk and parking around the docks when major events are on is a total nightmare.
