Transportation in Cheltenham and accommodation

Hi

We are family of 6 will be travelling to London in July (2 or 3 days) and will take a coach to Cheltenham and stay for 4 or 5 days to explore the small towns around Cotswold (Bath, Oxford, Bilbury, Burford, Bourton on the Water, Bradford-on-Avon, Broadway, Chipping Campden, etc).

Qs.1 Is it a good idea to base at Cheltenham or Cirencester?

Qs.2 Which town would have better transportation network?

Qs.3 Or renting a car from either place to get around easier.

Thank you in advance!

I'm afraid that to do what you are wanting to do in just 4-5 days, you are really going to need a car, as The Cotswolds is a very large rural area with very limited public transport across it.

If you have a car, then Cirencester would be the most central place to stay for what you want to do. However if you are reliant on public transport you will also need to stay for at least one night in Bath as that City is not well connected by public transport to the other places you have listed, except for Bradford on Avon.

Sorry this is late. Cheltenham has the advantage of Rail Station, which allows a trip to Bath (1Hr each way). There is also a steam conservation line. A circular tour based on public bus services is detailed in:

www.cotswolds.com/Portals/4/pdfs/vCarFree.pdf

which includes most of the places you have mentioned. It may be possible to vary the details and combine with Steam rail trip (to Winchcombe or Greet) .http://www.gwsr.com/ but would be expensive as there isn't a combined ticket or 1 way on railway.

If you undertake tour 2, try and make it Saturday as there is a brilliant Market Day in Stroud, you will need to adjust the suggested timings.

Oxford is 1 hr by bus from Cheltenham.
