Cosy traditional pub for New Year's Eve

Can anyone recommend a great cosy, traditional pub that will have a good atmosphere on New Year's Eve? Looking within a couple of hours drive of South London. Good food a plus and accommodation a bonus. We're a group in our thirties (mainly single ladies!), not looking for a wild time, but fun in a friendly atmosphere.

The Duke of Buckingham is in the High Street in Old Portsmouth ( http://www.dukeofbuckingham.net/index.htm ), and has accommodation as well. From there it's an easy 2 minute walk to the old Spice Island, which has great views of the Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quays and the Harbour (map: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?gl=uk&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Portsmouth,+United+Kingdom&ll=50.791193,-1.107302&spn=0.006185,0.029311&t=h&z=16 ).

There are 2 additional pubs on Spice Island (one is named the Spice Island Inn and the other is the Still and West), and people often gather outside the two of these at the end of Spice Island to celebrate the New Year.

There are also a few guest houses nearer the end of Spice Island, should you not find the Duke of Buckingham to your taste. There's http://www.fortitudecottage.co.uk/ or http://www.sailmakersloft.org.uk‎/

to name but two. There are more, so it's worth a google search or a search on the Portsmouth Tourist Information pages.

btw ... I don't personally endorse any of these venues, I've not stayed in them, I just happen to live locally. I have dined in both of the pubs on Spice Island, though, and found the Spice Island Inn food mediocre, and the Still & West mediocre to good, but the Still & West is a great location for ship-spotting while you dine.
