Reservations needed for Day Ferry from Portsmouth to Caen?

We plan to use the Brittany Ferry on a weekday in May, two of us traveling by foot with a carry on bag each. Our thought is to train down from London the day before and book the ferry for the next day then, as well as our return trip which would be on a Saturday, possibly by the high speed ferry. Does this sound OK or must we book online in advance? A "convenience" fee is added if one doesn't have a UK debit card which we certainly don't have here in the USA. Also -- any recommendations for a place to stay in Portsmouth for the one night? The reviews for the Travelodge near the ferry sound pretty bad. Thanks!

Difficult to say - as a foot passenger there's unlikely to be a problem but it's always possible if say they have multiple coach parties travelling or are short of crew (the number of passengers they are allowed to take depends on the number of crew present).

The fast ferry is more likely to be a problem - you HAVE to book a seat, but on the normal ferry you don't.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I finally just heard from customer service @ Brittany Ferries. They also say that as foot passengers we should be OK without advance reservations. Still checking for budget hotel or B & B close to ferry departure point. Portsmouth Tourist Board sent me a brochure but some of their advertisers, e.g., Hamilton House B & B, are NOT favorites among Tripadvisor reporters, oh well.

Not sure how much help I am, but we did the Cherbourg to Portsmouth on foot with no reservations and had no trouble getting tickets for 4 at all. And, we arrived at the terminal without much time to spare.

Sorry, I didn't read your post completely. We got a taxi from the ferry and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. We walked to the train station the next day. We're headed there again in two weeks and will base at the Holiday Inn Express again - couldn't find I liked any better on TA. HIE is still pretty basic - in '07 you only got the lights for an allotted period of time and then had to do something that would make them stay on longer. It was still free, but it was a first for us! But, it seems to be the best of the lot.

Thanks for the reply.

In the meantime, finally got a reply from Brittany Ferry that as foot passengers we shouldn't need advance reservations. Will arrive in Portsmouth the day before the trip to Caen anyway, and will probably buy our ferry tix then just to be safe (and because we may want to use the high speed ferry for our Sat. return). With the help of this site and some other research, we're booked for one night at the sounds very basic ETAP. Train station right there and read some comments that we can choose train or taxi to get to the ferry the next day.

Hi,

You will not be able to take the train to catch the ferry, it will have to be a taxi from the Etaphotel.

The hotel should have a free phone for Aquacars around a 3 mile trip, should cost you around £5 or £6, If not there number is 023 92654321

Thank you! This is why I love consulting Tripadvisor. Almost always, someone offers valuable information which is hard to come by elsewhere.
