Portsmouth Hen Do Help!

Hi everyone.

I am trying to orgnise my sisters hen do in Portsmouth for March 2011 but wanted some advice on where to go in the evening.

I think we will stay at either the Premier Inn (Port Solant) or the Ibis but I'm not sure yet. I have also been looking in restaurants that can accommodate us (there is about 25 of us!)

Therefore my question is, where is the nightlife in Portsmouth? And where would be good to go if we're looking for a few decent bars and a club to end up in so we can dance!

Thanks

Hi there,

First of all i would recommend staying at the Ibis as it is in the center of town, if you stay at Premier Inn (Port Solent) you will be at least 5 miles away from the clubs and bars.

We have two main areas for clubs and bars,

Guildhall right opposite the Ibis hotel, (younger & more chavy area)

2 clubs, lots of bars, with Liquid club near by.

Gunwharf Quays, A little more upmarket than the Guildhall, 2 min in a taxi,

Gunwharf has loads of restaurants, bars and a club see link.

Albert Road is also a popular nightout, you can do a fun pub crawl with a real mixture of venues!

Hi there, would definitely agree with Dave about the Ibis over Port Solent, although if you end up going to Gunwharf, theres an express inn that may be even more convenient

Personally, I'd go to Gunwharf as it has a good choice of restaurants and bars. I went for my hen do last year and had a brilliant time!!

I forgot to mention,

There is a Etap hotel which is only a £5 cab fare away from the bars and clubs,

they normaly do a room for 3 people for £50 at weekends.

Hey hun,

I have heard nothing but good things about Relentless (on Elm Grove, a 2 minute walk from the pubs of Albert Road) it's a seafood restaurant, so it's worth bearing that in mind if you're out for a messy one! but all the seafood is served fresh, caught on a boat called Relentless, it is a small place but if you book in advance they may be able to accomodate you - I don't see why not.

It is important to remember that taxis don't cost a lot between the main night-life places so if you eat in 1 place, taxis are only a few quid if you want to go elsewhere after - it's better to call & book, Aqua cars is the main local, cheap, taxi company, they can be unreliable but it's cheaper than flagging one down - if anyone knows of a better one, feel free to add it.

The thing with a night out in Portsmouth is, each of the 4 main areas (Albert Road, Gunwharf , Palmerston Road & Guildhall) caters for a different...er...type of person. Not knowing too much about your group or the ages I couldn't say which is best, but, here's a round-up:

Albert Road

Plenty of restaurants, all types of food but this is more a pub night out place, there's no clubs per se (except the Wedgewood rooms, which is a 400 capacity venue, you can check their website for the club-night on on the night you're out), but a few of the pubs stay open late - If you're into your music, indie, electro etc. Johnny Russell's is possibly one of the better options, it has DJs & is often packed.

It's fairly student-y around there, but generally a good, lower-key night out.

Guildhall

Er, as far as I know there really isn't too much by way of food around here. Although they do have the biggest clubs, I think they're called Time & Envy, a 90s bar called babylon, a shots bar, a whetherspoons if you like cheap booze, and another club that used to be called route 66 but has very recently changed name. All have facebooks/ websites. This is (sorry to be blunt) the most dire of the 4 places, but you may feel differently.

Palmerston Road

This place has recently got a couple of new drinking places and it's busy at the weekends - it's where the beauticians hang out - the people do like to dress up, lots of topshop boutique, fake tan and mega-heels.

Here there is a good chinese called Chez Choi (Nobel house over the road is owned by the same people I think) a good thai place (although I've not eaten in) & there's good pub grub at the Belle Isle (owned by the Johnny Russell's people) and a steak house, among others.

For drinks, Hong Kong Charlie's does sweety flavoured vodka/shots & it's fun - from malteser to skittles, at reasonable prices, for expensive drinks you could try Drift over the road or there's a new whetherspoons for cheap drinks.

Finally - and possibly your best option owing to variety and size - Gunwharf. Go check out the website, there's all foods & loads of chain places, to suit all budgets. Las Iguanas is AMAZING for cocktails, and there's a few clubs (Tiger Tiger/ Bar38 etc.), bowling, a casino, just more choice really. It's a bit generic, but it's hard to go wrong with so much choice.

American Bar's been mentioned (Old Portsmouth) it's nearest Gunwharf - you can easily walk - and the food is really good, it's the pricier end of what's on offer locally, but great value for what you get, so it depends what your aim for the night is.

If you're into drag artists/ a camp start to the night out, hampshire boulevard has good entertainment some nights - it's very gay & very camp.

have a look & call the places, a lot will offer deals if you've got a hen do and go out of their way to get your business, if not, I'd avoid going to that place.

A few tips:

everyone must bring ID, passport/ driver's license only - most local pubs/ clubs will not let anyone in without it, regardless of how old you look.

If you want to book a stripper (if it's that kind of night!), ask the place in advance, most will be fine but 1 or 2 I know of won't allow them if it's naked men!

Try not to be too drunk going in to places, don't fight & don't backchat the door staff, only 1 or 2 security companies do the majority of all doorstaffing & if you're refused entry for something you may not get in anywhere else worth going. I'm sure you're not those kind of people, but it's a head's up.

Stay at Etap, a local B&B, the ferryman off albert road, the ibis ( if you get a good deal) all are central - avoid port solent, unless you want a REALLY quiet night & the hotels are too far out.

You'll have to get taxi's (and if any of you need to get around alone at night, please do) but they are cheaper than most places so don't fret.

I hope you have a really good time, it's generally a friendly place with thousands of people out each weekend for a good time, enjoy!!

6. Re: Portsmouth Hen Do Help!

Wow thanks for all your help guys!

I have temporarily held rooms at the Ibis Hotel. I just need to find a restaurant to accommodate us and also plan some bars/clubs etc!

Can anyone recommend some restaurants that could accommodate such a large group? I also have a vegetarian and fussy eater to contend with! So I was thinking an italian or something similar. I have emailed Sopranos but no reply yet - where is that in comparison to the places you mention 'leftmyheartinlondon'?

From the sounds of it Gunwharf would be out best bet, although Palmerston Road sounds good too - are they near eachother?

Thanks

Any the restaurants in Gunwharf should be able to accommodate your size group.

Sopranos is in Palmerston Road

Ibis to Palmerston Road £5 cab, 1.3 miles

Palmerston Road to Gunwharf £5, cab 1.3 miles

Gunwharf to Ibis £5 cab, 0.9 mile

Heya

Palmerston Road is about a 5 minute, cheap, taxi ride from Gunwharf - I'm pretty sure there is a taxi rank outside Hong Kong Charlie's if you have any trouble booking a private hire cab - it's a small road so you'll see it easy enough.

As PortsmouthDave says above, any Gunwharf restaurant will be able to accomodate you if you book and they have all the main italian chains there.

I have to be honest, i have never tried Sopranos so sadly I can't help you there, but maybe someone else here knows? It's got good reviews on this site and plenty of others so have a google - I'll ask around & see if anyone I know's been - and what they think.

ALL good restaurants will be happy to accomodate any fussy eaters/ veggies, but depending what the requirements are it's always a good idea to let the restaurant know when booking, if they're funny about it then, you know it's not worth the risk!!

I'll ge tback to you bout Sopranos, but great news on booking somewhere to stay.

Jx
