Will you actually be IN Southampton? Or just staying in the area, hopefully with a car?

Mayflower Park on the waterfront in Southampton is the most famous viewing point, but I have quite a soft spot for the top floor of the Ikea multi storey car park, tho it can get breezy up there!

Going East there's the Country Park at Netley, where you can get right to the water's edge - or further on in Hill Head (near Fareham) is the Osborne View Pub - http://osborneviewhillhead.co.uk/ - which is built down the cliff with lots of windows & a nice garden (weather permitting).

Hopefully someone else can do 'West'?

Yes. me!!

You get a very close view from the end of Hythe Pier, which I think has the only remaining Victorian electric train, and is also great for a walk -

You can talk the 15 minute ferry crossing from the Town Quay at Southampton, all connected by public transport, very nice for a ride, then wander round Hythe itself - nice marina etc.

Also - try :

They go from Ocean Village, which is the next "bit" along from Town Quay - also very good (oh... I want to do that one with the 3 Queens.. but will not be in the country alas!)

In terms of general vantage points, diagonally opposite Southcoast gal, a very good view can be obtained from Calshot Spit, which is right at the mouth of Southampton Water - on a sunny evening there is loads to see - windsurfers and so on - and a great view of the Isle of Wight. There's lots of history here - the Sports hangar was built for WWII operations, this is where the Flying Boats were based.

Hope that helps.

**maybe I don't mean "Victorian electric" but see the website and you'll see what I meant! Oldest pier with train running I think...

The oldest operating electric railway is the Volks Electric Railway in Brighton http://www.volkselectricrailway.co.uk/ unfortunately the Daddy longs leg which ran through the see doesn't survive.

The longest pier railway is the one in Southend whilst Hythe claims longest continuously operating.

Be aware that some of these places get very busy if there are several ships going out at one time - particularly those in the city itself.

Are you planning to see the 3 queens or "7 ships a sailing" (P and O)?

Both these days will be horrendously busy times.

Thanks everyone. I would love to see the 3 queens but I think there are only a couple of ships leaving the weekend we will be there.
