Pre book ferry or turn up?

Hi, we are travelling to Isle of Wight on a Thursday and returning either Sunday or Monday. The B&B we have booked doesn't book ferries for their guests. Do we save a lot of money by prebooking? we would prefer the flexibility of not prebooking as long as we are not hugely penalised. Any recommendations?

There are several ferries, which go from & to different places on the IOW and the mainland, with different companies, some of which take cars and some foot passengers only. Whether its cheaper or not snd how much depends when (date and time) and which route foot passenger or not.

I know when I booked a car from Lymington to Yarmouth a few months back it was substantially cheaper to book specific off peak times. You'll just have to go to the relevant websites and play around with routes, dates, times to see.

AFAICR from using the hovercraft and fast cat it makes minimal if any difference but can be very big difference for car ferries, it all depends on the exact dates times routes. Try here http://www.wightlink.co.uk/

Take time to check out the various companies online.

There are some special offers going around at the moment.

I would definitely pre-book. As long as you have a rough idea when you will be coming you can generally get on the ferry before or after the one you have booked without too much hassle (or extra cost).

If you don't know when you will be returning then book a flexible ticket then you can change your return journey without incurring a fee - slightly more expensive ticket, but gives you more flexibility.

If you look at the websites (Wightlink or Red Funnel are the operators) then you can compare the various prices online easily enough (they work like the train ticket sites).

thanks everyone. I've now been to IoW, we prebooked our ferry. We had a great time and hope to go back one day.
