You could try putting a search for each island in the box above your question and see what information comes up. There maybe something said that appeals to you or the opposite. This could help you decide :-)

Each of the five inhabited islands are beautiful and offer something different. IMO for a first visit St Mary's or Tresco make ideal places to stay as they are the largest and have direct links to the mainland. St Mary's, as the main island, offers you most choice in terms of accommodation, eating out, frequency of ferries to the other islands, etc etc. Tresco is a privately owned island and benefits from having no cars (transport from the heliport is by tractor and trailer), though there is less to do of an evening (essentially the hotel and pub - both owned by the Tresco estate).

We stayed on Tresco for our 1st visit and are planning to go to St Martin's next time. Our neighbours have been a few times and always stay on St Mary's as they like the variety it offers (they stay in different accommodation each time).

I'd recommend that you carefully read the description of each island (the official tourism website is good), decide on the accommodation you want and go from there. If you are going self-catering book now. Wherever you end up, make sure you visit at least a couple, if not all, of the other islands.

If you love nature, tranquillity and that 'last bit of England' feel you will love wherever you stay.

I would probably stick to St Marys or possibly Tresco for my first visit.

St Marys is the hub for the inter island boats and will have the most options for trips to other islands and good options for eating/drinking.

If you then travel on day trips to the other islands you will get a feel for them for a possible return visit.

The downside to St Marys is that it doesn't have the wow factor and lack of people and traffic that the others have.

Also remember that you have to arrive on St Marys(or chopper to Tresco) all other islands have to be visited by boat only. http://www.scillyonline.co.uk/travel.html#to

We've been twice and both times stayed on St Mary's and took day trips to the other islands from there and for a first time visitor that's what I'd recommend. The only downside we found was that you had to keep a close eye on the clock to make sure you got the boat back to St Mary's.

Looking back on both visits I think the ideal situation would be to spend a couple of nights on each island though whether that's feasible is another matter.

I agree with Badcat although Tresco is our least favourite island. In our opinion it has been spoiled by the commercialism of the new buildings. St Mary's is a good base from which to explore the other islands. It has a good selection of pubs and restaurants as well as good beaches. It is quite easy to get away to more peaceful parts of the island. If you want beautiful beaches go to St Martin's, if you like rocks and archaeology go to St Agnes and Gugh - don't miss a pint in the Turk's Head. Bryher is just lovely, careful though the hotel is very expensive.

All of the Islands are lovely in their own way. St Marys has the only sizeable town (big village really) with a choice of B&Bs & hotels. Tresco is the plushest - privately owned, has a world famous sub-tropical garden and is still lovely despite the comments above, all things are relative. Bryer is small, has a great hotel and some holiday lets and is one of the most peaceful places in Britain. St Agnes is remote, with very little habitation and has the pub with the best pub garden view anywhere. St Martins has beautiful deserted beaches and cliffs. They are all different.

For a first time visitor St Mary's probably offers the greatest flexibility in getting to know the islands as it is the centre for boat trips but to be honest you could stay on any of them and enjoy the others easily.
