Cathedral with 11 year old boy

Hi

My son is studying Canterbury Cathedral in history this term, and as the school don't look as if they're planning any trips, we thought we'd take him to Canterbury for the weekend and make his history lessons a bit more real.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay in Canterbury that would suit 2 adults and an 11 year old, and if we were to make a weekend of it, what other places should we see, which won't completely bore my son!

Thanks for any advice.

Its a bit cheesey, but my kids loved the Cantebury Tales experience. They give you handsets to wander around with, and the kids certainly appreciated the slightly naughty humour involved. It was one way of introducing them to Chaucer too.

I vaguely recall it was a bit expensive, but you can get a deal with tesco clubcard points if you are organised:

If you have a car, how about a 'seaside' trip to Whitstable, Herne Bay or Broadstairs? (or Margate) - even if only half a day??

Howletts wild animal park is nearby:

A bit further afield, but also on a 'History' bent would be Chatham Royal Dockyards, take a look at the rope walk & rope making, see where the Trafalgar was built, plus it looks like they have a 1940's wartime 'event' going on on 20-21st w/e which might be fun!

When you take him to Canterbury Cathederal, be sure to find the place where St Thomas a Beckett was murdered, the flagstones there have a red 'stain', supposed to be the blood from where his head was smashed - nice and gruesome for an 11 year old boy methinks!!
