Christmas Day Lunch

We are staying in Lyminge Nr. Folkestone for Christmas and will be going to Cantebury Cathedral for it's Chrismas Day service. Can anyone recommend a special restaurant/hotel that we can eat lunch at after the service. Thanks, MrsB.

I would try kathton House

or The Abode may do it but may be pricey

Thank you, these both look good. Not so sure about Michael Caines for our two children though ages 14 and 12; have asked them if they do a children's menu? Have you eaten there for Christmas? Thanks again, MrsB.

With Kathton House you just need to be aware it's not actually in Canterbury, it's in the village of Sturry about 2 miles outside.

If you actually want to just be able to walk from the service to a restaurant, maybe consider Deeson's in historic Sun Street right in the old part of town just a few metres from the cathedral gate. It's new and I've not eaten there but it looks good:

Another top end restaurant in Canterbury is the Goods Shed which like Deeson's specialises in locally sourced produce, and was featured on tv in Countryfile at the weekend, it's about 10 mins walk from the cathedral in a converted railway shed which it shares with a daily farmers market (from where most of the ingredients are from).

The websites don't mention Christmas yet so you'd have to contact them for details.

Link to BBC iPlayer for the edition of Countryfile featuring the Goods Shed. There are shots of the farmers market at 31 mins into the programme and the chef cooks a dish in the kitchens at 35 mins although they don't show the restaurant itself (you can just about see a glimpse of it in the background at one point). This was broadcast on Sept 6th and is normally available for a week.

Just wondering whether to go to Canterbury Cathedral on Christmas Eve instead and look for somewhere special to eat in Folkestone or maybe Rye, Ham, Sandwich, Worth on Christmas Day...any suggestions please?

The goods shed is not open on christmas day and will be closed in the evening of xmas eve. There are a lot of places to choose for xmas dinner all on average about £80 per person.

We have eaten at the Abode on Xmas Day and it was nice but not superb value but one of the nicest Xmas Day menus at somewhere that now does lovely food is the Bell Hotel in Sandwich restaurant-guide.com/old-dining-room-at-the-… Easier to park there than Canterbury and its nice for a post dinner stroll, another lovely place for Xmas food is the Blazing Donkey just outside the town http://www.blazingdonkey.co.uk/.

Places seem to be booking up fast this year however!

Thanks very much for your input blueamber. Think we have now decided to eat at the Abbots Fireside in Elham as it near to where we are staying. Have you eaten here by any chance? We will definitely visit Sandwich during our week's stay and look up the restaurants you have mentioned. MrsB.
