Arrival station for day trip from London

Which station should we try to arrive at when taking the train from London? Are Canterbury East or West in the town?

We will spend the day on foot in the city.

Yes, they are both in the town.

Canterbury West will give you the chance to look at the historic Westgate first of all. Canterbury East will take you direct to the castle remains, the city wall and Dane John mound.

Henneth has summed it up nicely.

They are both equi-distant from the centre, no more than 10 mins walk.

It really depends which train you want to take from London - if you want to pay the slightly higher fare for the much quicker high speed service out of London St Pancras, you will arrive at Canterbury West.

Both routes are pretty. The final 15 minute approach to Canterbury West passes a string of lovely lakes. The final 15 min approach to Canterbury East passes through the fruit orchards.

You're welcome - glad to see you coming back to Canterbury!

Your ticket will simply state London Terminals to Canterbury Stations meaning it is valid for either East or West - you could arrive at West and return via East if you wish. But if you want to use the high speed route, your ticket MUST be valid for the HS1 high speed line.

Canterbury East has no step free access to the platform for trains TO London, if this might be an issue.
