Day Trip From London

I am driving down to Cliffs of dover from London at 430am, hoping to see sun rise there.

How long does it take to explore the cliffs of dover, any chance i could squeeze Canterbury in the same day?

The cliff-top walk from the Visitor Centre to the South Foreland Lighthouse is 2 miles according to the National Trust website, so the round trip to fully explore the cliffs is about 4 miles/6.5km. How long this takes is up to you! Perhaps allow 2-3 hours.

You should note that the Visitor Centre car park doesn't open until 8am:

If you are starting early then yes you can easily squeeze in Canterbury in the same day.

Yes, at that time of the day you will need to park along the seafront and walk up to the cliffs from the Eastern Docks (about 20 minutes to the start of the cliff access path). This added to the time you spend on the cliffs will dictate how long this leaves you for Canterbury.

With your early start there is plenty of time to do both: you can be in Canterbury really quickly.

Rather than the hassle of parking. you can drive to St Margaret's Bay and find the Dover Patrol memorial and park there for free. This is the earliest place the rising son first touches England (it's called Lethercote Point). From here you can walk East along the cliff top (be very careful and stay away from the edge) or head downhill and West toward Dover, which will take you down to St Margaret's Bay itself. The beach is pretty nice but there will be no chance of a cup of tea! Alternatively you can drive out to South Foreland lighthouse (a bit closer to Dover) and work your way down a tiny narrow footpath to the left of the main gate which will take you to the cliff top. Again: be very careful. If you walk toward Dover from here you might see the mast of the Preussen which sank here. NOTE that if you are near South Foreland then keep an eye on the kids - the place is full of old military bunkers and some have holes in the roof for small children to slip through.

From St Margaret's Bay Canterbury is a 30 minute drive: straight up the A2. You can park in the town centre in loads of places or use the Dover Road Park and Ride at Canterbury South. When you leave: drive out along Wincheap to the A2 (we have a nice new slip road toward London, not on maps yet). If you are at the Dover Road P&R then you drive toward Bridge and Dover and switch back toward London after 200m.
