Dover Priory to Dover Castle - can we walk?

Good morning TA-Dover!

I would like to visit the Castle and found that it's a hike from the train station. I also found this link - http://visitbytrain.info/kent/dover.htm that talks about a stagecoach leaving from Priory and going to the Castle. Is all of this information still valid as of 2014? Can we just hike it up? We're in our 30s and reasonably fit so it's not as if it's impossible to do, but wanted to check!

Hi Vikram,

Yes it's still current. "Stagecoach" www.stagecoachbus.com/eastkent is the name of the bus company, not the mode of transport. You would want bus number 15 towards Deal. Note it goes from Dover Bus Station in Pencester Road in the town centre, not from Dover Priory rail station.

The current timetable is here:

The Dover area bus route map can be seen here:

If you are fit and can cope with a steep walk uphill and/or steps then you may prefer just to walk.

If arriving by train, don't forget to obtain 2 for 1 offers from the leaflets at train stations or from:

Dover Priory to Dover Castle is about a 20 minute walk. Go through town and up Castle Hill. A little steep, but it's fine. You will go in via the lower entrance. Just think, it's all downhill when you leave...lol.

Just walk - it's an interesting one, too.

I walked it a week ago-really easy to find. Go out of the station, turn right, walk straight ahead and after a few minutes you will see a tourist map on a poster. Go on, turn left, go on along the street and soon you'll see the castle in the distance. Just keep going following the road signs to it.
